Its quiet out here

Left the keys in the door again, half-past eight Another morning running fifteen minutes late The emails pile like dishes in the sink I haven’t had a second just to sit and think It’s a blur of school runs and the workshop floor Always looking for the handle on a closing door The sun hits the dash, it’s a blinding white And suddenly the morning’s turning into night. And the week just disappears Like the tread on these old tyres Building up the years Feeding all the fires Faster now Faster now. The days are rolling by like a road-train in the dust Everything is moving, or it’s gathering rust I love the noise, I love the heavy load But I’m looking for the turn-off, the end of the road Where the signal drops to nothing and the world goes grey And I can finally put the "busy" away. My phone’s a dead weight, vibrating in my palm Every notification is a false alarm I’m the boss of the tools, I’m the boss at the gate Always trying to keep the bloody ledger straight Then I hit the open road and the air turns cold Watching all the green turn back to gold. Finally shut the engine down Can’t hear a single soul from town Just the magpies calling and the wind in the gums This is the only place where the heartbeat thrums No more "checking in", no more "moving fast" Just a bit of peace that’s actually built to last. The days are rolling by like a road-train in the dust Everything is moving, or it’s gathering rust I love the noise, I love the heavy load But I’m looking for the turn-off, the end of the road Where the signal drops to nothing and the world goes grey And I can finally put the "busy" away. Just put it away. (Yeah, put it away...) God, it’s quiet out here.
