VERSE 1 We carried every city That made us who we are We carried Clarksdale's delta blues Like a compass and a star We carried New Orleans' spirit And Detroit's iron soul We carried Appalachian winter And Birmingham's burning coal PRE-CHORUS We didn't carry it to prove it We carried it because it's true We carried it for everyone Who carried it before we knew CHORUS What we carried made us stronger Than the weight could ever be What we carried was the music And the music made us free Every sorrow we inherited Became a song we gave What we carried brought us here From every unmarked grave What we carried Was the gift VERSE 2 We carried Memphis thunder And Chicago's sleepless night We carried Savannah's memory And the Muscle Shoals light We carried every stage that held us Every room that heard our name Every broken heart that healed itself By singing through the pain PRE-CHORUS (choir enters) We carried it for those who couldn't We carried it for those to come We carried it because the music Doesn't stop when you go numb CHORUS What we carried made us stronger Than the weight could ever be What we carried was the music And the music made us free Every sorrow we inherited Became a song we gave What we carried brought us here From every unmarked grave What we carried Was the gift BRIDGE (piano alone, then piece by piece the band enters) Nine cities in our voices Nine stories in our hands Nine people on a platform Learning how to understand That what you carry isn't burden When you carry it with love And what we thought would break us Was the thing we're made of FINAL CHORUS (full gospel, every voice, every instrument) What we carried made us beautiful More beautiful than we could know What we carried was the music Everywhere we had to go Every heartbreak was a highway Every wound became a door What we carried brought us home What we carry now is more What we carried What we carry What we're carrying Right now Is the gift OUTRO (choir humming the melody of Center Stage) (Jackson, quietly) We didn't lose anything. We were carrying it the whole time.
