THE NIGHT WAS YOUNG

THE NIGHT WAS YOUNG Well... the night was young, sweetheart. And so were we. There was gin in the glass, there was smoke in the air, there was something about you that wasn't quite there. You were laughing too loud, I was drinking too slow, and the moon through the curtains had nowhere to go. The band played a number about hearts on the run, you danced with the devil like he owed you one. And I thought, “Ain't love funny?” You said, “Baby, it is.” There was lipstick on crystal, your perfume on me, a key on the table and two by the door. He smiled like a gentleman, dressed like a sin, and you poured him a drink before I let him in. Now a man with good manners don't stare quite that long, and a woman who's innocent don't know that song. But the piano kept playing, the bass kept its time. And you looked at me smiling... like everything was fine. Oh, the night was young, the gin was cold, you had a secret you weren't gonna hold. The room was warm, the moon was thin, and somebody somewhere was letting somebody in. Ah, but that's love, baby, that's how these things begin. with a little bit of trouble and a little more gin. The clock said two, but the night said one, and the shadows got longer when the music was done. You disappeared briefly, came back with a smile, said, “Don't ask questions, darling...” So I waited awhile. There was something on your shoulder, something red on your hand, but I figured it was lipstick, or maybe the band. Then somebody knocked softly... Three times. Not four. And you looked at the doorway like you'd seen it before. Oh, the night was young, but the room was old, the whiskey tasted bitter, and the silence tasted cold. The fire burned low, the moon looked in, and somebody somewhere was letting somebody in. Ah, but that's love, baby... that's how these things begin. Now I ain't no detective, and I ain't no saint. I know what I saw, but I ain't saying what I ain't. Everybody's got secrets, everybody's got lies. Some wear 'em on their fingers... some wear 'em in their eyes. You said, “Come sit beside me.” So I sat down close. You poured one for me... then one for your ghost. The raven outside gave a terrible cry. You looked toward the window. I looked in your eyes. And somewhere downstairs a floorboard complained. Then the telephone rang... and rang... and rang... Oh, the night was young, but the dawn was near. There was something in the room we didn't want to hear. The gin was gone, the candle was thin, and somebody somewhere... was letting somebody in. So kiss me, baby. Don't ask why. The night is young... and nobody's died. ...yet.
