Headlights gone, the engine's cold Every shadow starts to take a hold Footsteps crunch, a whisper in the breeze Something's watching, puts my mind at unease The snow is hard, the woods don't care A branch snaps loud, a chill in the air Pines close in, a tightening grip One wrong move, and you're gonna slip Keep your mouth shut, keep your hands in sight No wrong turns here, no stopping tonight Boot prints crust over in the drift Sap hardens black on a split limb Stay sharp, your breath goes thin Between the trunks, the cold stays low Something moves back there, just out of sight A deer at the line with its ribs cut bright Trap chain ticking where the path goes blind The air thins, firs hold still Prints wash out, but the trunks keep count Every dragged step cut in the bark Your people, tied to a tree, gone white A single red mitten, frozen to the snow, near their feet You scream, too late, steel at your throat One pull, the trail goes dark
