I used to think that faith meant believing You would somehow make it right, That if I prayed enough and trusted, You would turn the dark to light. That every heart would someday soften, Every broken thing restore, And faith meant standing there believing You would open every door. But I've stood here longer than I wanted, And the door is closed today, And I'm learning there are different kinds Of faith along the way. I still believe You can fix this, I still pray someday You will, I believe that hearts can change And mountains move before You still. But if the answer isn't coming In the way I thought it ought, I will trust that You are with me Whether You fix this or not. I have asked You for the miracle, I've imagined what it means— A phone call, an apology, A healing in between. I've pictured arms around each other, All the years somehow restored, And I still leave that prayer before You, I still know that You are Lord. But maybe faith is more than waiting For the answer I can see, Maybe sometimes faith is knowing You'll be there whatever comes to be. Maybe faith is not the promise That I'll get what I have prayed, Maybe faith is trusting You When nothing seems to change. Maybe peace is not the ending Where every wound is gone, Maybe peace is finding You And knowing I can carry on. You were there before the breaking, You were there when it began, You were there inside the darkness When I couldn't understand. And if tomorrow brings the miracle, I'll praise You for that day— But if tomorrow looks like yesterday, You'll still be here. You'll stay. So I will leave the door unlocked, Lord, But I won't live beside the door, I won't spend the life You've given me Waiting there forevermore. There are people here to cherish, There are journeys still to take, There is laughter in the living room, There are memories still to make. I can hope without demanding, I can grieve and still move on, I can leave what I can't carry In the hands that carried me this long. I still believe You can fix this, Oh, I know the power You hold, You can soften hardened places, You can bring the wanderer home. But my faith is growing deeper Than the answer that I sought— Now I know that You are with me Whether You fix this or not. I asked You for a miracle, And maybe I was looking wrong. I thought the miracle was changing them, Making everything belong. But through a year I never wanted, Through every question, every loss, You never promised me the ending— You promised I would never walk it alone. So yes, Lord, I still believe You can fix this. But now I believe something more: You will be with me whether You fix this or not.
