THIS IS WHAT YOU WANTED You wanted the keys on the table The coffee made before you came home A room where the arguments ended A hand that would leave you alone So I learned every answer you favoured Stopped asking where all of this led I gave you the quiet you asked for And slept on the far side of the bed You said, “That’s better,” so softly Like something had finally gone right I watched you relax in the doorway Then disappear for the night This is what you wanted This is what you wanted from me No questions, no trouble, no needing Just someone who knows when to leave This is what you wanted I gave you the whole thing for free Now look how perfectly empty The life you were asking me to be Your jacket still hangs by the radiator Though winter has almost moved on I keep it there out of habit Or proof that a habit was wrong The neighbours still ask how you’re doing I tell them the version we chose You got what you needed completely I got very good at letting go You said, “Don’t make this dramatic” So I folded the note in my coat There’s nothing more calm than a goodbye That nobody bothers to quote This is what you wanted This is what you wanted from me No questions, no trouble, no needing Just someone who knows when to leave This is what you wanted I gave you the whole thing for free Now look how perfectly empty The life you were asking me to be I hope it feels just like you pictured The clean lines, the merciful space I hope when you turn the light off You don’t find my shape in the place Because I did exactly as promised No scene, no blame, no last plea You wanted a person made simpler So that’s what you wanted from me This is what you wanted This is what you wanted from me No questions, no trouble, no needing Just someone who knows when to leave This is what you wanted Hear how the silence agrees You got every piece of the answer Except for the part where it’s me This is what you wanted This is what you wanted, you see I gave you the life you described And you gave it back without me This is what you wanted This is what you wanted from me ______________________ Produced by Mickey Wilder. © All rights reserved.
