Guntersville Rough Weekend
[Intro] We left Tennessee Friday, Boat hooked up, tackle loaded. Four days on Guntersville. Sounded like a good idea. [Verse 1] Me and T rolling south, Crooked Hooker behind, Mushy and Eleven somewhere back in line. Coming down Monteagle, phone starts to ring, “Pull over at the lookout, I wanna see this thing.” We hit the brakes where the big trucks roll, Looking for a view that apparently nobody knows. Wrong mountain, wrong spot, nothing there to see, Except a falling-rock sign and a semi mad at me. Took the picture anyway, called the mission complete, Hit Big Mike’s for some fish and something good to eat. Cabin after midnight, alarm set for three, First day hadn’t started— Already sounded like me. [Chorus] Guntersville, Guntersville, Man, what a ride. Every time we fixed one thing, Something broke on the other side. Crooked Hooker kept running, So you know we stayed. If the boat still floats Then we’re fishing anyway. Lost some gear, lost a wheel, Lost good judgment somewhere too. But if you ask if we’d go back— You already know we do. [Verse 2] Saturday morning, Mushy called in sick, So me and T launched and went looking for fish. Mink Creek hydrilla, mats looking right, Green pumpkin red Brush Hog getting that bite. Then five minutes happened that made the whole day, Largemouth after largemouth coming our way. Keeper after keeper, about twelve in the mix, Nothing breaking records, but we finally looked legit. Then Sonic for lunch and back for a nap, Woke up looking around like, “Well, I guess that’s that.” Whole afternoon gone, never went back out, Professional fishing operation— Without a doubt. [Chorus] Guntersville, Guntersville, Man, what a ride. Every time we fixed one thing, Something broke on the other side. Crooked Hooker kept running, So you know we stayed. If the boat still floats Then we’re fishing anyway. [Verse 3] Sunday before daylight, biscuits and hope, Mushy needs a license, I’m needing a smoke. We’re headed for Mink Creek thinking everything’s fine, Till something underneath us starts changing its mind. Wheel tucked under, tire chewed through, Bearing gave up like bearings sometimes do. Caliper beat down, aluminum scarred, Guntersville said, “You boys ain’t fishing that hard.” Borrowed some lug nuts, limped toward the lake, Called T’s buddy in Dickson for whatever it takes. Thirty-minute repair and we’re ready again, Most folks would've gone home— We went fishing instead. [Bridge] Wheel fell apart? Fix it. Wrist hurting? Fish with it. Storm coming? Watch it. Mushy got my Oakleys? Knew it. Should we call this trip? Nope. We drove all this way. Launch the boat. [Verse 4] Back at the cabin, Willie’s getting cold, Eleven grabbed one, feeling pretty bold. T explained the details just a little too late, Then we hit South Sauty and awaited our fate. Thirty seconds later, Eleven went quiet, That alone should've triggered a scientific study. Three hours sleeping while the rest of us fish, Never knew silence could sound quite like this. Then Mushy hooks up— Rod loaded down. Four-pound largemouth, best fish we found. Camera comes out, everybody grins, Mushy saves the weekend— I’ll give him that win. Storm clouds building, so we headed back in, Burgers at the cabin, thought the trouble might end. Then gravel underfoot had a different plan, One leg went forward, other one went— Man. [Verse 5] Heard snap, crackle, pop when I hit that slide, Caught myself wrong and tore up my pride. Wrist took the landing, hurt every cast, But we came here to fish— So you know how that passed. Hat disappeared, Oakleys changed hands, Trailer tried quitting down in Alabama land. Eleven got muted, Mushy caught four, And somehow Guntersville still wanted more. Monday we loaded and pointed toward home, Everybody waiting for the next thing to go. But mile after mile, nothing went wrong, That peaceful ride felt suspiciously long. No wheel fell off. Nobody got sick. Nobody fell down. Nothing broke on the rig. After everything Guntersville put us through— That was the weirdest part of the trip. [Final Chorus] Guntersville, Guntersville, You gave us a ride. Twelve quick largemouth, And a four-pounder besides. Crooked Hooker kept running, And the crew made it through. Every disaster became Another story that grew. Lost some gear, lost a wheel, Left some skin and pride there too. Ask me if we learned our lesson? Probably not. When we going back?
