WH 40k. Ksun Bakir. My Last Day

V5.5

[Intro - quiet, almost without music] Today they promised me eternity. Funny word. Yesterday I was afraid I wouldn’t live to see the dawn. And today they tell me: — Enter the machine. — Close your eyes. — There will be no pain. — You will wake immortal. … Then why am I so afraid? [Verse I] I remember the morning of my final day, Cold metal beneath the palm of my hand. All around me they said: — Salvation is near. — Now we are stronger than gods and death. But people looked into each other’s eyes like those saying goodbye forever. I could hear the pulse beating in my temples. So simple. So foolish. So precious. My heart was still beating. [Pre-Chorus] They promised me: “You will never fear death again.” But no one told me that before becoming immortal I would have to die. [Chorus] THIS IS MY LAST MORTAL DAY! My final breath. My final fear. The final warmth of light upon my hands. Just a little longer — and everything will disappear: Pain. Tears. Sleep. My body. They promised me eternal life. Then why do I feel as though I’m walking to my execution? This is my last mortal day… And I don’t know if I will wake as the woman I was. [Verse II] A crowd stood before the gates. Someone held a child against their chest. An old man said: — Our children will live forever. … I remembered those words. I wanted to forget them. I couldn’t. One step. Another step. White light. Black metal. The smell of ozone. A scream somewhere ahead. — It’s normal, — they said. Normal? [Bridge I - music fading] I wanted to run. Yes. I… just wanted to see the sun. To touch the earth. To hear the wind. Give me one more day. Give me one hour. Just one more— [sharp metallic impact] Too late. [Verse III - cold machinery rising] They laid me down on a freezing metal table. — Personality preservation. — Consciousness transfer. — Biological shell will be lost. I asked: — And the soul? — AND THE SOUL?!!! … “PROCESS INITIATED.” [Chorus - heavier, desperate] THIS IS MY LAST MORTAL DAY! The final beat of the living heart inside me! I feel the cold. I feel the light. I feel— I am no longer here! You promised eternity! You promised life! If this is salvation— WHY AM I SCREAMING?! If this is immortality— WHO IS DYING RIGHT NOW?! [Mechanical Interlude - nearly silent] Cardiac activity terminated. Neural transfer complete. Biological shell: lost. Consciousness: stabilized. Awakening in… Three. Two. One. [Silence] [Verse IV - cold female voice] I opened my eyes. But there were no eyelids. I tried to breathe. But there were no lungs. I looked down at my hands. Metal. I touched my face. Metal. I searched for a pulse. Nothing. I tried to scream. And heard a sound that could never belong to a living creature. Metallic. Cold. Alien. — Where is my body? Disposed of. — Where is my heart? Function not required. — Where is my blood? Function not required. — Where are my tears? Function not required. … — Where am I? [long pause] You are here, Ksun Bakir. [Bridge II - grief rising] All around me the others began to rise. Thousands. Millions. Someone tried to call for their mother— but only grinding metal came from their throat. Someone beat their fists against the wall. Someone simply stood there. We received immortality. We defeated disease. Age. Death. And only then did we understand: death was not the worst thing. [Final Chorus - massive tragic orchestra, crushing guitars, funeral choir] THAT WAS MY LAST MORTAL DAY! I remember the sun! I remember the fear! I remember my heart in its final beats! You gave me eternity! You took away the warmth! You saved my life— BUT WHAT DID YOU SAVE?! I look upon the world through metallic eyes, and all I want now is one heartbeat. ONE. One breath. ONE. One tear. ONE. One second of the woman I used to be. But the machine inside me answers: “IMPOSSIBLE.” [Outro - lonely piano, broken whisper] That is how Ksun Bakir was born. On a freezing metal table, a mortal woman closed her eyes. And I was the one who rose. Now I am no longer afraid… I am afraid that one day I will forget what it felt like to be afraid of death. Because then nothing will remain of that woman. … But for now, I remember. That was my last mortal day.
