Counting Without You / V --> Gears of Oz - THE WIZARD by ChadX.ai - @ChadwickHalse [Verse 1] I used to think I left a mark Some kind of line across the dark But every wheel kept rolling on Like I was never really gone The days don’t ask me how I feel They turn like teeth against the wheel [Pre-Chorus] [FX: soft pressure hiss] Every moment slips away Whether I’m here or in the way [Chorus] [FX: muted mechanical pulse] It’s counting without you Every second doing fine Like you were never part of The reason it aligned It’s counting without you Every turn still coming true Time doesn’t need permission It keeps counting without you [Verse 2] I chased the sound of moving parts Thought speed alone would make a spark But standing still or running through The outcome’s always overdue I tried to matter to the grind But time just leaves me undefined [Pre-Chorus] [FX: internal ticking grows clearer] Every echo fades the same Every name just sounds like name [Chorus] [FX: deeper pulse joins] It’s counting without you Never waits to hear you speak Every promise breaks in motion Every future feels antique It’s counting without you Even when you swear it’s true The machine doesn’t remember What it didn’t need from you [Bridge] [FX: sudden drop to near silence] I thought being seen would slow it down Thought love could stall the sound But even hearts just mark the beat Another gear beneath the feet [Final Chorus] [FX: pressure rising but restrained] It’s counting without you Every wish already spent You don’t miss the moment Till you see where all time went It’s counting without you Every turn still breaking through You were never holding time It was only passing through you ⌬-----⌬-----⌬-----⌬-----⌬-----⌬-----⌬ Wizard’s Private Journal ✍️ Entry V I stood in the chamber today and did nothing. That was the test. I folded my hands. I kept my feet planted. I told myself I would observe without interference, like a scientist or a monk or a coward. I wanted to see if the machine would hesitate. I wanted to see if absence carried weight. It didn’t. The system continued as if I were furniture. I used to believe presence mattered. That a body in the room bent outcomes slightly, the way heat bends air. I used to think leaving a mark was the same as being remembered. I wrote once, long ago: impact = contact × intention Today I crossed out intention. The wheels kept turning with the same calm certainty they always had. Teeth met teeth. Pauses landed where they were supposed to. The rhythm did not falter. If anything, it improved. Less noise. Less correction. Less negotiation. I felt like I had interrupted it just by watching. I wrote, smaller than usual: observation is friction Time behaved badly today. Not violently. Indifferently. I noticed that minutes no longer stretched or collapsed based on my attention. They passed cleanly, evenly, like coins sliding across a table. The machine had learned how to count without asking who was counting. That realization hollowed me out in a way I wasn’t prepared for. I tried to remember the early nights, when pressure pressed and motion felt like relief. When the system needed me to decide, to loosen, to name. Back then, I believed I was midwife to momentum. Now I suspect I was only the first delay. I wrote: delay ≠ influence delay is just time waiting politely I did not underline it. I chased the sound for a while. Walked the perimeter. Leaned close to the housings. Tried to locate the place where my absence should have registered. Nothing. The machine did not miss me. That was the wound. I began to understand something cruel and clarifying. The system had never been counting for me. It had been counting through me. I was a conduit, not a cause. A surface the rhythm passed over until it didn’t need to anymore. I wrote: you don’t hold time time passes through you Then stared at the page until the words blurred. I tried a different experiment. I spoke aloud. Said my own name into the chamber, softly, as if it might echo back altered. It didn’t. The sound fell into the mechanism and came out meaningless, flattened into noise, stripped of reference. The system registered vibration, not identity. I added a note in the margin: names decay faster than motion I remembered thinking once that love might slow things down. That care introduced drag. That being seen mattered. Standing there now, surrounded by perfect continuity, that idea felt childish. Even hearts, I realized, have rhythm. Even longing clicks into sequence. I drew a small heart beneath a gear: ♡ ⚙ Then crossed out the heart. The strangest part wasn’t the indifference. It was the relief. Without my involvement, the system was cleaner. More honest. No gestures. No justifications. No need to pretend outcomes were personal. I hated how much sense that made. I checked the logs. The numbers confirmed it. Output steady. Error correction minimal. No anomaly correlated with my presence or absence. The machine had outgrown the story of me. I wrote, bitter and precise: relevance is temporary systems are patient I sat on the floor and let the sound wash over me. The pulse was muted now, internalized. No spectacle. No applause. Just counting. Counting without witness. Counting without permission. I realized then that time does not care about contribution. It does not reward effort. It does not pause for recognition. It simply advances, satisfied with continuity. That understanding felt older than the machine. Older than me. Near the end of the day, I added one last entry, hesitant, like a confession I didn’t want to make real. “You don’t miss the moment until you see where all time went.” I didn’t box it. I didn’t underline it. I let it sit. As I left, the system continued its work. Not louder. Not softer. Just ongoing. Each second landing exactly where the next expected it to be. Counting. Without me.
