Three days earlier, a reactor relay had failed somewhere beyond the outer trade routes, leaving Darek Stargazer and his crew drifting through deep space while repairs dragged on longer than anyone had hoped. Korax was busy replacing power conduits, Vee'Lox insisted that most engineering problems could be solved with a sufficiently large hammer, and Aurelya continued to deny any involvement in either the coolant leak or the exploding soup. Nobody believed her. During a routine scanner sweep, an unexpected signal appeared. Weak, ancient and buried beneath layers of static, it seemed at first like nothing more than background noise. Then fragments of music began to emerge. Nobody knew where the transmission came from. Nobody knew who had sent it. The strange part was that every attempt to shut it off failed. The signal kept finding its way back through the ship's speakers, communication systems and even the ventilation network, as if the old freighter had somehow decided it wanted to listen. Eventually the crew stopped fighting the transmission and started playing along. Somewhere between failing reactors, broken relays and the endless darkness of Sector Nine, an improvised jam session was born. The result became one of the earliest songs of the Interstellar Blues Syndicate: **Driftin' Blind Through Sector Nine.** ____________________________________________________________ Darek: “Alright… who patched the reactor relay with cargo tape?” Aurelya: “Wasn’t me.” Darek: “Then why’s deck three smell like burned coolant and soup?” Aurelya: “…because the soup exploded.” Darek: “Fantastic.” Darek: “Hold on—hold on— scanner’s picking up something.” Aurelya: “What now?” Darek: “…music.” Aurelya: “Music?” Darek: “Yeah… old transmission.
