Not the wheels. Not the engines. The violins. They sounded… impossible. Like somebody had taught fire how to dance. So naturally, I followed them immediately. Which continues to be a questionable survival strategy. [Verse 1] Through iron rain and crooked tracks past smoking trains and coal-black stacks I saw the lanterns move at night red and gold in drifting light Wagons built from brass and wood patched together where they stood Steam escaped in hissing sighs sparks reflected in their eyes Then the music hit the air fast and wild and unaware Violins like sharpened flame every chorus, rearranged. [spoken] I am reasonably certain the accordion player had six fingers. [Pre-Chorus] Every drumbeat bent the street every step misplaced the beat Clocks would twitch and then delay while the caravan played [Chorus] They borrowed time to make their sound spun the seconds all around Brass and fire, strings and steam built from hunger, run on dream Faster hands and faster feet dancing gears beneath the beat And somewhere in the screaming tone I heard something… not my own [Verse 2] Children laughed beside the flame though they never stayed the same Old men danced like they were young broken voices suddenly sung Trumpets cracked like bursting wire boots struck sparks against the fire Every note would twist and spin like the song had broken in I tried writing rhythms down every pattern slipped around Bars refused to stay aligned time itself fell out of time [quietly] …that should not be syncopated. [Pre-Chorus] Then I saw beneath the glow faces moving far too slow While the music thundered on tiny minutes… paid and gone [Chorus] They borrowed time to make their sound burned tomorrow to the ground Steam and cinder, bow and chain laughing loudly through the pain Every chorus cost them more yet they played still louder than before And underneath the violent tone something answered… from my own [Verse 3] Then the leader looked at me like he knew what I could see Clockwork coat and silver grin eyes like turning gears within He said, "Collector, hear this well: every sound will leave a shell. Every song demands its due. Now the caravan hears you." Then he handed me a key warm as fresh machinery Marked with symbols, strange and thin none a sane man would have known. [whisper] …I recognized them instantly. [Bridge] Wheel turn Fire burn Bow break Clock shake Laugh loud Crowd thins Night bends Song ends [Final Chorus] They borrowed time to make their sound left their echoes in the ground Brass and smoke and fractured light singing fiercely through the night And though the caravan is gone sometimes when the dark comes on I still hear that violin Too fast. Too close. Again. [Spoken Outro] I did attempt to measure the phenomenon scientifically. Unfortunately… the notebook aged twelve years overnight.
