Learned danger through the drywall, love with one ear to the door. Little feet knew every floorboard, knew what silence sounded for. Mom made a dollar look like twenty. Dad made tired look fine. Thought adults had answers they were buying time. I blamed cracks across the ceiling before I understood the rain. Funny how you judge an umbrella till you’re holding one the same trying to keep somebody dry while you’re standing in the storm. Then I felt what they were holding and got hit by lightning. Then I grew up. My keys. My bills. My ghosts. Found my parents in reflections I swore I’d never know. Something followed home the alarm. WE INHERITED FIRE then blamed each other for the smoke. Everybody choking, thinking they’re alone. Fighting over buckets, who deserves the hose. Maybe power isn’t fire maybe it’s knowing which alarms to ring. SURVIVE. SURVIVE. SURVIVE. Became some things younger me would hate. Old defenses in my language, old explosions on my tongue. New hands. Same prints. Damage done. You can hate the loaded weapon and still learn to become one. Love costs time, money, patience, presence. Sometimes surviving so hard makes someone you love pay the difference. Then it hit me survival is an ancient lever. History wrote it plainly: YOU ARE PROPERTY. Hands weren’t yours. Hours weren’t yours. Families sold. Freedom wasn’t “find another job.” It was a road you might die to reach. So no rent is not a chain. Debt is not a whip. Nobody owns my body. Don’t shrink that history. Learn from it. What happens when someone controls what another needs to live? [Build] FOOD. SHELTER. FAMILY. SAFETY. Chain and consequence aren’t the same. History taught us survival is leverage. You still have exits. That’s freedom. But what if you can’t afford to walk through them? FREE BUT WHERE? FREE WITH WHAT? FREE FOR HOW LONG? Rent. Food. Heat. Gas. Debt. Sell hours. Buy hours. Lose hours. One bad month turns choice into triage. Pay this. Delay that. Fix the car. Skip the dentist. Take the shift. Miss the birthday. Nobody owns you. Consequences stand behind you counting backward TEN. NINE. EIGHT SURVIVE. No mastermind required. Incentives feed the machine. Desperation bargains cheaper. Fear shortens futures. Give fear a face. LEFT. RIGHT. US. THEM. YOUR JOB. MY JOB. YOUR FLAG. MY FLAG. LOOK HERE. DON’T LOOK UP. Flags in classrooms, history cleaned for little eyes. Age into the footnotes, find scars between the lines. Quiet rooms calculate. Someone distant pays the price. I won’t hate some kid across an ocean raised on different lies. He might love his mother just like I love mine. Make him fear me. Make me fear him. You barely need to aim us survival does the rest. Then the picture widened. Childhood taught me how alarms get wired. History taught me what controlled survival costs. Scarcity shrank my world when everything felt urgent. Every smoke alarm is screaming. No wonder we can’t hear each other. Still Coffee in sunlight. A laugh so hard the whole room forgot its weight. A hand finding mine when nothing was left to say. I’ve fed somebody. I’ve been fed. Watched something sleep because it trusted me. Had five good minutes in a terrible year and somehow five minutes mattered. Tiny things. Garnishes on a plate mostly filled with suffering. And somehow IT’S DINNER TIME! SO PASS THE PLATE! Give me seconds of the good. Five minutes with my people. One night understood. Sunlight through the blinds. Bass shaking the room. One more reason to see tomorrow afternoon. Maybe getting free means knowing what’s burning and what’s an alarm someone learned to ring. Not every stranger is fire. Not every frightened person is my enemy. I can understand who hurt me without becoming what hurt them. Understand who raised me without calling them perfect. I can own my damage without making it someone else’s inheritance. Growth might be the only thing suffering can pay forward. Take what burned you. Turn toward it. Make something another person can breathe. I don’t need you to notice my scars. I need them to illuminate something. I already paid for this lesson. Take it for free. Take whatever light survived me. Grow somewhere I never see. WE INHERITED FIRE but inheritance isn’t destiny. I can’t change what entered me. I can change what leaves. That lightning once came through me now I decide where the current leads. Heat or light. Hurt or insight. Another wound or something that helps somebody heal.
