Day 250 — Please, come back

My love, The house is too quiet again tonight. Even the clock sounds louder, like it’s counting something I don’t want to know. I keep turning the radio on just to fill the air, but it doesn’t help. It’s not your voice. I made your coffee this morning. I do that every day now. Two cups. Always two. Yours sits there until it’s cold, and then I pour it out, whispering sorry under my breath like I broke something sacred. I know it’s foolish, but it makes me feel like you’re still part of the morning. The bed feels too big. I still sleep on my side, the way I used to when you’d pull me close from behind. The sheets on your side stay untouched. I can’t bring myself to wash them. They still smell like you. I fixed the fence out back yesterday. You said you’d do it when you got home, remember? I used your old gloves. They’re too big for my hands, but I wore them anyway. It felt like you were there, holding the wood steady. I cried after. Not loud. Just… quietly, like the world wouldn’t notice. People stop by sometimes. They talk about the war, the papers, the news. They say brave things. I nod. But when they leave, I sit here and stare at the door, because one day, it’ll be you walking through it. It has to be. Every night I light a candle on the windowsill. You can probably see it from wherever you are. That’s our signal, remember? The way home when it gets dark. So no matter how far you’ve gone, you’ll always have a light waiting for you. I dream of you most nights. Not the uniform, just you. Laughing, teasing me, stealing the blanket. When I wake up, I reach for you before I realize you’re not there. The cold where you should be hurts more than the dream ever could. I don’t pray, but I still talk to you. Out loud, sometimes. Just so the walls remember your name. If love could build a bridge, you’d already be here. So please, hold on. For me. For us. Come home soon, and I’ll make that same old coffee, and we’ll sit by the window like before. We won’t talk about the war. We’ll just listen to the rain, and maybe... maybe.... I’ll stop shaking when I breathe. I love you more than this world deserves. Come home, my heart. Please. — Yours, always. Reviens vite.
