V5.5

** “The Desert Remembers Footprints” D’a OutLaw Written by Stephen Ray(12Gauge858) **Vocal Rule:** Da’OutLaw is the only singer. This is not a duet. All vocals must be male-only: one smoky raspy male baritone lead, optional low male humming, optional deep male Gothic choir. female vocals, no lead female background vocals, no female choir, no female ad-libs, no call-and-response with a woman. [Intro — low smoky male spoken, desert wind, distant horse snort, dark cello underneath] Mmm… You ever stand somewhere so quiet you can hear what pain left behind? Out here… the wind don’t tell everything. But the ground do. Texas dust on my boots… Vegas lights dying behind me… and miles of sand in front of a man that still had to keep walking. [Horse breath — close, rough, cinematic] The desert remembers footprints. [Verse 1 — male lead only, outlaw country guitar, slow 808 pulse] I pulled off where the blacktop cracked past the last neon sign Had a Bible on the dash and a pistol I don’t brag about no more My hat brim low my knuckles scarred my chest still carrying names I don’t say loud in daylight There was a bottle cap half-buried by a tire track in the clay A torn blue scarf on barbed wire fighting not to fly away And I thought about everybody who walked through hell with no witness Everybody bleeding quiet while the world called it distance I ain’t come out here to preach I ain’t come out here to judge I came because the silence felt familiar enough [Pre-Chorus — male lead, cello rises, low male Gothic hum only] I seen men disappear in daylight with their pain tucked in their jaw I seen parents cross state lines with no sleep and one last call I seen boys become old souls before their voice turned deep I seen prayers hit dry ground and still grow something underneath [Chorus — raspy male baritone, big but restrained] The desert remembers footprints even when the wind moves on It keeps the shape of every soul that had to crawl before it walked It knows who broke in silence It knows who kept their faith It knows the miles nobody clapped for and the tears that left no trace So when my boots sink in that red sand I don’t ask who made it through I just tip my hat to the ground ’cause the desert remembers footprints and I know it remembers you [Post-Chorus — male lead only, low male choir hum] Mmm… It remembers you… [Horse snort, wind sweep] Yes, it do. [Verse 2 — male lead only, drums deepen, 808 heavier, dark slide guitar] I seen a man outside a motel counting quarters in his hand Steel-toe boots split open like his whole life had been planned Had a faded name in blue ink wrapped around his wrist He kept staring toward the highway like forgiveness might come quick I didn’t ask him for his story I could read enough in place The sun had carved a canyon right across that brother’s face And down the road, a little farther near a gas pump buzzing low Someone held a paper sack like it was all they had to own Had sand stuck to their ankles had the world behind their eyes But they stood there still breathing and sometimes that’s the fight I watched someone step off that curb like the earth owed them one chance And I swear the desert leaned in just to honor how they stood [Pre-Chorus 2 — male lead, low male choir only] I seen shame lose its power when the sun came beating down I seen guilt fall off shoulders where no church bells made a sound I seen folks with no announcement leave their old selves in the dust And keep walking with cracked lips ’cause surrender cost too much [Chorus — stronger, cinematic male vocal only] The desert remembers footprints even when the wind moves on It keeps the shape of every soul that had to crawl before it walked It knows who broke in silence It knows who kept their faith It knows the miles nobody clapped for and the tears that left no trace So when my boots sink in that red sand I don’t ask who made it through I just tip my hat to the ground ’cause the desert remembers footprints and I know it remembers you [Bridge — stripped down, spoken-sung male lead, cello and sparse guitar] Now I got my own set of tracks out here… Some lead back to trouble Some lead away from pride Some start beside a graveyard where I left a part of me behind Some came from West Texas thunder Some from rooms I couldn’t breathe Some from nights I told the Lord “Don’t let the old me follow me” And I ain’t proud of every footprint but I honor every mile ’Cause every step that didn’t kill me put more truth inside my smile I learned sand don’t need a witness to hold proof that you survived Sometimes God writes your testimony where no man can read the lines [Breakdown — horse breath, chain rattle, low male Gothic humming only] Mmm… The desert don’t laugh at limping. It don’t shame nobody crawling. It just says… Keep moving. [Final Chorus — full production, male lead only, low male choir support, distant thunder] The desert remembers footprints even when the wind moves on It keeps the shape of every soul that
