Look Beyond The Sea

The ocean calms to mirror-glass The wreckage drifts away I look back at the iron line That kept my heart at bay I thought it was a sanctuary A shield against the deep In truth it was a heavy cage I forged to make me sleep For years I dropped the anchor down Whenever winds would blow Too terrified to trust the wave Or where the tide might go The quiet harbor called my name With promises of peace But safety built on silent fear Is never true release I take the steel into my hands I strike the iron ring The chain yields to the strike Hear the heavy metal sing! It tumbles down into the dark Where shadows go to die No longer tethered to the floor Beneath an open sky The anchor belonged to who I was Look beyond the sea! The fear did not vanish... it simply lost its authority. I am no longer fleeing the water. I am steering it. The static shore is swallowed whole The water carries no regret I hold the helm with steady palms On waters clear and wet
