Taken Too Soon

--- Continuing in the Grunge theme. This time the song is about addiction and the ones that have been taken too soon. Back during a time where drugs were more glorified and thought of as being part of the cool crowd, and a way to escape. But, the damage to people, to families, to loved ones sometimes can't be fixed. Leaving the ones that remain angry with no place to direct their anger. Figured it would be a good topic for a grunge song. Wanted to get a blend of rage and haunting elements. This one had more rage, but I think it worked just fine for what I was looking for. ~David --- [Musical Introduction] [Immediate distorted guitar hit — no slow build] [Drums slam in, tight and aggressive] [Verse 1] They said it made you dangerous They said it made you real Passed it around like communion Promised you’d finally feel It was cool to disappear Cool to flirt with death Now the crowd you tried to impress Is just names we can’t forget [Pre-Chorus] Every hero had a needle Every ghost had friends We didn’t lose them all at once We lost them again and again [Chorus] Taken too soon With too much left to say They turned pain into fashion Then walked the hell away Taken too soon Now I scream at empty air I’d punch the sky if it would bleed But there’s nothing fucking there [Verse 2] I watched the light leave familiar eyes One bad night at a time They called it living on the edge I call it crossing lines They sold us self-destruction Like it was part of the sound Now the ones who chased the high Are six feet underground [Musical Interlude] [Music Solo] [Pre-Chorus] Tell me who I’m supposed to blame When the damage is already done You can’t fight a chemical You can’t hit what you can’t touch [Chorus] Taken too soon For a scene, for a lie They traded futures for a moment Just to feel alive Taken too soon Now the anger’s all I own If I could break the world in half I’d finally feel less alone [Verse 3] It wasn’t just the famous ones It was brothers, sisters, friends Kitchen floors and hospital lights That still play in my head They said it helps you fit right in Helps you drown the noises Now the silence is a graveyard Full of their unfinished choices [Musical Interlude] [Feedback swell, drums half-time, tension simmering] [Bridge] What do you do with a fist full of rage When the enemy’s already dead? What do you do with a lifetime of loss When the past won’t stay buried instead? I’d burn it down if I could see it I’d tear it apart if it bled But addiction doesn’t wear a face So it lives inside my head [Breakdown] [Vocals nearly shouted] You can’t fight a ghost You can’t punch regret You can’t save the ones You already buried yet [Final Chorus] Taken too soon And we let it be normal We called it art Called it beautiful Taken too soon So tell me what we learned Will the next generation be smarter Or just find a new way to get burned? [Lyrical Outro] Different drugs Same damn graves Different highs Same mistakes [Musical Ending] [Fade Out] [End]
