Ascension Day (Ascension Thursday)
Forty days from the empty tomb He rises now beyond the sky In glory clouds, the Lord ascends To claim His throne on high Witnessed by the chosen few On Olivet the moment came His hands raised high in blessing As heaven called His name The clouds received Him from their sight Two angels dressed in white appeared “Why stand ye gazing up above? He shall return as He has reared” King of Kings, enthroned in light Yet leaving us in earthly night Ascension Day! Thursday of glory Grave Sacrament of Heaven’s story He rises high, the veil is torn The King returns to where He was born! No longer bound by mortal flesh The Son returns unto the Throne At the right hand of the Father He intercedes for His own The wound of parting cuts so deep Yet hope is kindled in the pain For where the Head has gone before The Body soon shall rise again King of Kings, enthroned in might Guide us through this long dark night Ascension Day! Thursday of glory Grave Sacrament of Heaven’s story He rises high, the veil is torn The King returns to where He was born! The disciples stand in silent awe Hearts heavy, spirits torn in two Yet promised the Paraclete shall come To lead them and renew From earthly bonds He breaks away In radiant cloud and blinding light The gates of Heaven open wide For the Lamb who conquered night King of Kings, forever reign Through joy and through the pain Ascension Day! Thursday of glory Grave Sacrament of Heaven’s story He rises high, the veil is torn The King returns to where He was born! Now seated at the Father’s side In majesty beyond all time He pleads for those He sanctified With wounds that ever shine Until the day the skies will split And every eye shall see His face The Ascended Lord in power returns To judge the human race King of Kings, enthroned in light Yet leaving us in earthly night He ascends… yet never leaves us He departs… yet remains At the right hand of the Father Interceding through the flames Ascension Day! Thursday of glory Grave Sacrament of Heaven’s story He rises high, the veil is torn The King returns to where He was born! Forty days… the sky consumed Him… Clouds of glory… swallowed the King… He ascends… yet calls us home… Ascension Thursday… eternal flame… He ascends… yet never leaves us He departs… yet remains At the right hand of the Father Interceding through the flames
