(1) A Glimpse of His Glory ( A Glimpse of His Glory...)
(Segment 1) ( A Glimpse of His Glory...) The Lord’s presence at that 3 a.m. encounter was as if I were in the cleft of the rock, hidden in Christ. To be in God’s presence is beautiful and terrifyingly wonderful all at the same time. I was enveloped by the Holy Spirit’s presence, aware of God’s grandeur, His immensity, His infinity, and His majestic glory, yet He became so close and personal, only a breath away. What can I say? It was so humbling; it illuminated the depth of my soul by the sheer weight of His awesome presence and by my knowledge of who God is. Just as Elijah discovered at Mount Horeb, God’s presence often comes not in the mighty wind or fire, but in a gentle whisper, filling the soul with profound awareness. Perhaps it is more accurate for me to speak of the attribute of God rather than the attributes of God. For the more I have studied and meditated on who God is, the more I have come to see that God is not a collection of perfections, but one perfect, simple, undivided, pure Being. To know God as one in essence, three in persons—one in nature and one in glory—is a profound, unfathomable mystery to me. To comprehend that every divine perfection shines with the same holy, divine, eternal power and light, all in perfect harmony and will within the wholeness of the Holy Trinity—Father, Son, and Holy Spirit—is awesome to behold. But what has moved me most to worship is not the theology itself, but how, in beholding who God is, my knowledge of God began to give way to knowing God. Not that I understood Him more completely, but that I became more deeply aware of His presence. I found myself being drawn into a deeper relationship with Jesus Christ and into worship. More than any other pursuit in my walk with God to date, the study of His divine being has become a call to worship and adoration. The more I behold the God who is in His Word, the more I see who I am—a fallen creature before a holy Creator God, a sinner yet now gloriously saved by my Redeemer's blood. By the grace of the Lord Jesus Christ, and the love of God, through whom I now have fellowship in the Holy Spirit, I find myself overwhelmed by the love and mercy of God revealed in Holy Scripture and in Jesus Christ, my Saviour and Lord. To be captured by the holy being of God is, for me, to be enraptured by the splendour of the Trinity: to know the Father's love revealed fully in the Son, and to know that the Holy Spirit's presence is within me, has brought me to my vertical limit of understanding, beyond the bounds of mystery. I am hidden in Christ. Hallelujah! There is no better hiding place than in God. I am resting in the all-sufficiency of Jesus' perfect, sinless life, His sacrificial death on the cross, His glorious resurrection, and His triumphant ascension into heaven. I am now clothed in Christ's righteousness. Hallelujah! I come before the throne of grace in prayer, not in terror or fear, nor at a distance, but through my relationship with Jesus Christ. Coming before the throne of grace in a posture of worship and prayer is truly wonderful. I stand before the beauty of the Holy One, transparent before Him in adoration and awe, and I cry out, "Holy Father," in Jesus Christ's name. The Scriptures say we can never know God fully, for God is incomprehensible; our knowledge of Him will always be creaturely, finite, and limited, yet always growing before Him. For all that is God is in God—yes, in His divine entirety—complete in all fullness and in perfect harmony. God is without parts; God is a complete whole. Each of God's beautiful, holy perfections shines with the same divine intensity, like unvarnished, pure white light. God is not partly holy and partly love, partly good and partly gracious. No, never! God is never partly anything at any time. God is always full of love, always full of power, always totally just, always perfectly good and merciful, and always possessed of perfect knowledge. God is always complete in every perfection He has revealed of Himself to His creation. This is who was present in my room, in my heart, and in my mind. I know I have laboured the point, but only to highlight the profound significance and transformative power of being in God's holy presence that night.
