Birk and the Robber Queen
[Intro – Playful fiddle and acoustic guitar, building into thunderous folk metal] Once upon a time, beneath the northern sky, Two children made a promise that would never die... [Verse 1] Deep within the Mattiswood, Two young lovers once had stood. Hand in hand beneath the trees, Swearing they would both be free. Never rob and never steal, Never bow to sword or steel. Leave their fathers' ways behind, Live in peace and peace of mind. [Pre-Chorus] But twenty years can change a man, And ruin every noble plan. Now every merchant knows her name, And Birk has only her to blame! [Chorus – Huge, catchy folk metal anthem] We swore we'd never be robbers! We swore we'd never steal! Now she's the queen of Mattiswood, And I'm just part of the deal! Oh, Birk and the Robber Queen! The wildest pair you've ever seen! She takes the gold, I take the blame, And nothing's ever been the same! [Verse 2] Ronja wears a crown of gold, Rules the forest, fierce and bold. Mattis laughs until he cries, Borka cannot trust his eyes. Every wagon pays its toll, Every merchant loses gold. Birk just sighs and shakes his head, "Should have been a smith instead!" [Pre-Chorus] The king has sent a hundred men, But none have dared come back again. For Ronja rules with iron pride, And Birk just tries to stay alive! [Chorus] We swore we'd never be robbers! We swore we'd never steal! Now she's the queen of Mattiswood, And I'm just part of the deal! Oh, Birk and the Robber Queen! The wildest pair you've ever seen! She takes the gold, I take the blame, And nothing's ever been the same! [Instrumental Break – Wild Scandinavian fiddle duel, flute melody and galloping guitars] [Verse 3 – Humorous storytelling] The rumpnisses have joined the crew, The grey dwarves want their share of loot. The wild harpies guard the sky, And frighten every traveller passing by. Birk remembers younger days, The waterfalls and woodland ways. He whispers, "Love, we made a vow..." She laughs, "We're doing better now!" [Bridge – Dramatic, slowing down before the final explosion] Once they dreamed of freedom, Of a life beyond the blade. Now their names are legends, And their fortunes have been made. Birk looks at his queen and sighs, As northern stars fill up the skies. "Do you remember what we said?" She grins, "Now get your boots, there's gold ahead!" [Final Chorus – Full band, gang vocals, fiddle harmonies] We swore we'd never be robbers! We swore we'd never steal! Now she's the queen of Mattiswood, And I'm just part of the deal! Oh, Birk and the Robber Queen! The wildest pair you've ever seen! She takes the gold, I take the blame, And nothing's ever been the same! [Outro – Fiddle and tavern choir, laughter in the background] We swore we'd never be robbers... We swore we'd never steal... But she became the Robber Queen... And I just cook the meals! [Final fiddle flourish – laughter and a crashing ale tankard]
