"The Testament of Generation-1945" The song is inspired by the philosophical tenet of Dag Hammarskjöld, the second Secretary-General of the United Nations, who died in a plane crash on September 18, 1961, while on a peacekeeping mission in Africa: "The UN was not created to take mankind to heaven, but to save humanity from hell." [Verse 1] In the shadow of the fire, where the hopes of millions fell, We made a vow to build a wall, a fortress 'gainst the hell. Not a promise of a paradise, a utopia of grace, But a shield to guard the future, for the whole human race. From the ashes of the battle, rose a covenant to hold, A Great Testament to Earthlings, for all Generations, from Nineteen Forty-Five. [Chorus] Oh, United Nations, hear the echo of the call, The legacy of victors, who would never let us fall. Not to lead us up to heaven, but to stand for what is right, And defend the walls of justice, with the victors' guiding light. [Verse 2] Through the decades we have witnessed, tempests rage and conflicts breed, Planting seeds of dialogue where hungry mouths must feed. We are doctors in the crisis, we are voices in the fray, A stubborn, steady candle, lighting up the darkest way. For the child who needs a classroom, for the refugee's new start, We are the threads of patience, weaving a united heart. [Chorus] Oh, United Nations, hear the echo of the call, The legacy of victors, who would never let us fall. Not to lead us up to heaven, but to stand for what is right, And defend the walls of justice, with the victors' guiding light. [Bridge] Eighty years of turning pages, with each challenge, scar, and test, This flawed and vital vessel, still pursuing what is best. For it's not a marble tower, but the will to understand, This is our shared inheritance, across every land. The enduring prize of peace, passed from that Generation's hand, The one that gave us this great vow, back in Forty-Five. [Chorus] Oh, United Nations, hear the echo of the call! This precious, lasting treasure, for the future of us all! Not just to guard from hell's abyss, but for a world that's just and free, To bear the torch that Generation passed to our century! [musical interlude] [end]
