Enlil Speaks First

[Verse 1] I am Enlil. I am the air before your breath. I am the dark crown of the sky and the law that splits the riverbank. I was there when clay remembered hands. I was there when names learned to stand. My word is a ridge of stone. My silence makes kings kneel. [Pre-Chorus] Look up. The heavens turn by my command. Look down. The furrow opens at my name. [Chorus] Enlil speaks first Enlil stands first Mountain of decree I hold the storm-door Enlil speaks first Enlil stands first Give me your oath and I give you order [Verse 2] My dominion is the open height, the driving wind, the counted rite. I keep the measure of the fields, the gate of rain, the weight of oaths. Ninlil walks beside my shadow. Her voice is grain in the hollow year. Together we bind the season’s bones, together we wake the sleeping earth. [Pre-Chorus] When I turn, the banner trees bow low. When I breathe, the reed beds learn to sing. [Chorus] Enlil speaks first Enlil stands first Mountain of decree I hold the storm-door Enlil speaks first Enlil stands first Give me your oath and I give you order [Bridge] I am not gentle. I am not small. I am the threshold before the fall. Children of mine carry my weather. Lords of the earth answer together. [Final Chorus] Enlil speaks first Enlil stands first Mountain of decree I hold the storm-door Enlil speaks first Enlil stands first Give me your oath and I give you order Enlil speaks first Enlil stands first Hear my true name and the world stays ordered
