The Hidebehind Polka

V6

[Intro – Jaunty accordion and tuba] [Spoken, matter-of-fact] There's something in the Northwoods That nobody's ever seen. And the fellas who went looking? Well... they haven't been seen either. [Verse 1] Old Joe was cutting timber When he heard a branch go snap. He turned around, saw nothing, So he went back to his axe. Something moved behind a pine, Then ducked behind a birch. Joe spun around to catch a glimpse, And landed in the dirt! [Chorus] Oh, the Hidebehind, the Hidebehind, He's always out of sight! You won't catch him looking at you, But he'll watch you every night. Behind a pine, behind a stump, Behind a twig or two, And if you think you're all alone, He's probably watching you! [Verse 2] Now Joe had heard the stories Of the loggers gone astray. The only thing they found of Bill Was his boots the following day. Now Hidebehinds hate whiskey, That's what the old folks say. Joe pulled a flask out of his coat, And scared the beast away! [Bridge – Music stops] [Spoken] Joe raised his flask and hollered, "Come on out, you ugly stick!" [Pause] The Hidebehind declined. [Final Chorus – Lively accordion] Oh, the Hidebehind, the Hidebehind, He's always out of sight! You won't catch him looking at you, But he'll watch you every night. Behind a pine, behind a stump, Behind a twig or two, And if you think you're all alone, He's probably watching you! [Outro – Accordion flourish] [Spoken, dry] Joe still cuts timber up in those woods. Course, he hasn't worked a sober day since. [Final tuba note]
