[Fade out] English Version Prose: Solitary Drink The night in the Northeast is, indeed, too cold. The river wind at this hour bites; rising from the pitch-black ice of the Songhua River, it threatens to freeze even the soaring Gothic spire of the Sacred Heart Cathedral into a brittle, hard bone. This is my final night stationed in my hometown. My friend and I took refuge in a tavern. He hails from the Bohai Bay—a slender fellow who carries the habits of a "dragon" in his daily life: languid and casual. At this moment, he is sunk deep into the armchair opposite me, cradling a cup of hot cocoa. Behind his glasses lie eyes that have seen through the ways of the world. His fingers swipe across his phone screen, likely inspecting the ticket stub for tomorrow’s return journey. He exudes a mundane warmth, starkly different from the world outside that has been sealed by the severe cold. I ordered a cocktail named The Orchid Pavilion Gathering (Lanting Jixu). When the bartender served it, I was slightly startled. The liquid in the cup was deep with ink-black hues, as if it were the residual ink left by Wang Xizhi when he washed his brush by the winding stream in the late spring of the ninth year of Yonghe. The lower layer, however, bloomed into a milky white, resembling soft rice paper, or perhaps the unmelted snow of the Northeast at this very moment. A single golden ginkgo leaf floated solitarily atop this "ink pool." The glass wall was printed with Wang Xizhi’s drunken words from a millennium ago, and beneath the glass lay a coaster imitating calligraphy paper—a veritable inkstone of Wei and Jin dynasty spirit that could not be dissolved. I lifted the glass. The ice cubes struck the inner wall, making a crisp "clinking" sound. In the noisy tavern, this sound seemed exceptionally desolate, like a sigh traveling from the Wei and Jin eras. "Why drink something so cold?" My friend looked up, pointing at the black-and-white special blend before me. "It’s called atmosphere," I replied with a secret smile, raising the glass—CHEERS. Back at the Orchid Pavilion, Wang Xizhi lamented that "Life and death are indeed of great magnitude," and that "What we looked upon with pleasure, in the twinkling of an eye, has become a mere trace." Now, in a corner of this northern river city, departing tomorrow, every blade of grass and every tree here and now will vividly become a mere trace in my memory. Outside the window, the wind is tight. I raise my cup and drink down this mouthful of ink-colored ice and snow. After the spiciness passes, there is a bone-piercing chill, followed by an unspeakable, grand sorrow. Yet, a faint mellowness spreads across the tip of my tongue, as if soothing my uneasy and restless soul. Lyrics: The Black Orchid Pavilion [Verse 1] The northern night sinks low and deep Outside the window, the river’s a silent galaxy asleep Eleven below zero, the wind is a knife Shearing away the excess noise of life [Verse 2] Sunk in relaxation, head bowed in a lazy trance Fingertips slide on the screen, giving time no glance Hot cocoa in the palm, steaming with gentle heat Resisting the winter that forces its retreat [Pre-Chorus] I sit alone in this warm corner’s embrace Ink swirls in the cup, a soul’s trace Ice hits the glass, like the pulse of time beating I drink down the Wei and Jin sorrow, fleeting [Chorus] Gazing up at the vast universe, looking down at this cup of sand We speak no words, yet hear snow fall on the land The joy we once held, in a glance, has turned to ephemeral flowers This gathering is also a grand evaporation of ours [Verse 3] This place marks a parting, the landscape left as blank space The black Orchid Pavilion seals a sorrow we embrace If we meet another day, with grey at our temples shown This cup of ice and snow makes a specific account known [Bridge] (Spoken or Softly Sung) You ask, in such cold weather, why add ice? I say, this is atmosphere, a willful device. Black and white liquor, like ink on rice paper written Cold and heat entangle in the air, smitten Sobriety and drunkenness displace under the lamp's light [Outro] The sky is clear, the biting wind blows The winding stream is the wind that spring knows Sitting in silence is the winter of the North Time pauses beside the cup, bringing forth... Let this night swallow me whole Swallow me whole Swallow me whole (Fade out) Japanese Version Prose: (Fade out)
