As part of the tour, we were led by a young PhD, the "Cage Observer" for that night's scheduled observations. Responding to questions from the group, he described the thrill of 'discovering' a distant star no one had ever seen before on a night's run earlier in the week. Then, as we walked to another stop on the tour, he shared with a few of us how the day after that 'star sighting', at supper, when he related his big discovery, his sister had quoted Psalm 147:4, saying God had known even the star's name long before their laying eyes on it. He said her excitement and dead seriousness made him really think. Arriving at the next stop, he said, "You know, I think she's right." Then he was swallowed up by the rest of the group as they Ooo-ed and Ahh-ed over a collection of photographs made through the telescope. I've thought about that young man several times through the years - did he come to understand as his sister had... āšThe 'Unnamed' Starš ā "He counts the number of the stars; He calls them all by their very own Names. Great is our Lord..." ~Psalm 147:4-5 Astronomer Version ā The Unnamed Star [Verse 1: Setting The Scene (Isolation & First Light)] The frozen wind that climbs the mountain side, Breathes a hush the waking calendars canāt hide. I trace the steps toward dawnās unspoken door, Where hope is kept but never shown before. [Verse 2: The Core Metaphor (The Silent Heavens)] They built their visions on the starless dark, A quiet chapel with a fading spark. And every night, the watcher scans the deep, Yet finds the truth still drifting where the cold infinities sleep. [Chorus: Revelation Approaching (The Unnamed Light)] Oh, the color of the cosmos leans to gray, Fading out along the rim of dying day. We were too proud to even think to pray. We stood too far away to hear Him call It by Its very own Name, Where all the wandering questions broke yet felt the same. All us scientists just kept playing our conceited game. [Verse 3: Personal Introspection (Lost Years & Wonder)] The data logs are full of fractured schemes, The ghost of younger choices haunts my drifting dreams. Did I trade the wonder for the measured glow, And let the orbits steal the truths I longed to know? [Verse 4: Pre-Dawn Memory / His Sisterās Words] Across the ridge where pale November lies, In the quiet of her calm, untroubled eyes, My sister spoke of stars the Lord once named, And morning felt as though the map of heaven changed. [Bridge: Escalation Of Imagery (The Discovery)] But the heavens only turn one solemn way, Past the monuments of wonder and decay. I saw the monitor awaken, burning bright, And the silent Star that had No Name ignite. Itās a parabola of awe I cannot shake. To open blind eyes - what will it take? [Final Chorus] Oh, the color of the cosmos leans to gray, Fading out along the rim of dying day. We were too proud to even think to pray. We stood too far away to hear Him call It by Its very own Name, Where all the wandering questions broke yet felt the same. All us scientists just kept playing our conceited game. [Outro: The Step Into Faith ā Vast, Quiet] And the lonely dust drifts softly to the floor... What were we searching for? What were we searching for...
