[Verse 1] In a hat shop off the bend I saw Jervis grin again Six clean cards in his hand And a teatime stain on the land He said, "Come sit, don't be shy" With a rabbit spark in his eye I heard them boots on the floor Then three knocks at my door [Pre-Chorus] He tipped that brim so low Said, "Baby, where we go The moon don't get a vote And the same old sins float" [Chorus] Down, down, to the tea The Mad Hatter takes me Round, round, I can't flee The Mad Hatter takes me He sweet-talks doom like a prayer Leaves me spinning in the chair Down, down, to the tea The Mad Hatter takes me [Verse 2] His suit was green as bottle glass His laugh came hard and fast He pinned my shadow to the wall Then made a party of my fall There was sugar on the knife There was honey in the strife Every smile felt wired tight Like a storm in Sunday light [Pre-Chorus] He tipped that brim so low Said, "Baby, where we go The moon don't get a vote And the same old sins float" [Chorus] Down, down, to the tea The Mad Hatter takes me Round, round, I can't flee The Mad Hatter takes me He sweet-talks doom like a prayer Leaves me spinning in the chair Down, down, to the tea The Mad Hatter takes me [Bridge] Now the clock hands bend and bow Every second sells me out If I hear that rabbit laugh I know I'm halfway through the trap So pour it cold, pour it black If I don't come running back Tell the pines and tell the creek The Hatter stole what he could keep [Chorus] Down, down, to the tea The Mad Hatter takes me Round, round, I can't flee The Mad Hatter takes me He sweet-talks doom like a prayer Leaves me spinning in the chair Down, down, to the tea The Mad Hatter takes me
