[Verse 1] There's a neon sign that still burns red Over a room where the warmth went dead Somebody paid for the lights to stay Long after everybody walked away I sweep the floors and I change the sheets For a set of footsteps I'll never meet I leave the light on out by the door For a car that isn't coming anymore [Pre-Chorus] Coffee on the burner, still warm Door unlocked through every storm Hope's a habit I never quit And I'm still standing in the middle of it [Chorus] (Vacancy) The sign still glows (Vacancy) But nobody knows The lights are on, the doors ain't locked Nothing's moved and the clock's still stopped (Vacancy) Empty heart, empty rooms All of it still saved for you Nobody's checking in tonight (Vacancy) With the sign still bright [Verse 2] There's a name in the book from a summer night Traced so often it's fading white A number I don't call anymore But I keep it taped to the office door They moved the highway two towns east Took the travelers, took the heat Now it's just me and the humming light Counting the cars that never turn right [Pre-Chorus] Coffee on the burner, still warm Door unlocked through every storm Hope's a habit I never quit And I'm still standing in the middle of it [Chorus] (Vacancy) The sign still glows (Vacancy) But nobody knows The lights are on, the doors ain't locked Nothing's moved and the clock's still stopped (Vacancy) Empty heart, empty rooms All of it still saved for you Nobody's checking in tonight (Vacancy) With the sign still bright [Bridge] My hand's on the switch, been there for years One little flip and it disappears But as long as it burns, I can call it waiting And not the slow way a heart stops beating [Guitar Solo] [Final Chorus Key Change Powerful and energetic] (Vacancy) The sign still glows (Vacancy) But nobody knows The lights are on, the doors ain't locked Nothing's moved and the clock's still stopped (Vacancy) Empty heart, empty rooms All of it still saved for you Nobody's checking in tonight (Vacancy) With the sign still bright [Outro] Vacancy... vacancy... Nobody's living here but me (Neon hum fades out)
