[Verse 1] I saw a tree above the others At the lot behind the store You said, let's measure it first I said, I've done this once before The lot man tied a tag around it I backed the pickup nice and slow Then stood beside that short old bed And felt my confidence let go [Pre-Chorus] You raised one eyebrow, not a word I knew exactly what I'd heard [Chorus] The tree won't fit the truck I guess I aimed too high The tall one needs a bigger home We'll choose a smaller one to buy I'll bring a tape next Christmas You can say, I told you so The tree won't fit the truck But both those trees can glow [Verse 2] The lot man said the town hall needs A tall tree for the square He had a truck to take it in If we'd agree to share He found a fir that fit our bed We brought it home by three At dusk the big one lit the square For everyone to see [Chorus] The tree won't fit the truck I guess I aimed too high The tall one needs a bigger home We'll choose a smaller one to buy I'll bring a tape next Christmas You can say, I told you so The tree won't fit the truck But both those trees can glow [Instrumental - fiddle and lap steel, eight bars] [Bridge] Our tree fit nicely by the window With one bright star upon its top I told you I had meant it all You laughed and said, of course you did [Final Chorus] The tree won't fit the truck I guess I aimed too high The tall one needs a bigger home We'll choose a smaller one to buy I'll bring a tape next Christmas You can say, I told you so The tree won't fit the truck But both those trees can glow [Outro] We visit both trees every evening One in town and one at home.
