You Looked First

Jude Mercer
Alternative R&B and nu-disco crossover with modern R&B pop songwriting, restrained UK jungle and dark atmospheric drum-and-bass influence, 112 BPM, Start with an eight-second cold open: muted electric guitar plays a tight four-bar hook with a rhythmic pickup, one unexpected upward interval, an answering lower smoother phrase, and slightly uneven phrase timing; avoid generic disco riffs, arpeggios, and predictable pop melodies, On the second pass, elastic bass answers rather than doubles the guitar, kick enters late, Rhodes gives one warm harmonic response, then leave half a beat before the vocal, Youthful male lead vocal with a smooth slightly nasal edge and warm chest tone, relaxed conversational delivery, intimate verses, crisp hook-focused chorus, subtle doubled vocals on key repetitions, Arrangement: sparse pocketed verse, lifted pre-chorus, catchy chorus, tension-building bridge, instrumental break returning to the exact guitar motif with a new bass variation, Rhodes accent on the high note, gradual drum return, and altered final two guitar notes, Tight dry vocal, rounded bass, muted guitar detail, warm Rhodes, punchy late-entering kick, syncopated hats, tasteful atmospheric pads, controlled stereo width, polished modern mix, No EDM drop

[Instrumental Cold Open] [Instrumental] [Verse 1] You were talking I wasn’t listening Not because Of what you said You looked over For a second Then you looked away Too fast I smiled You didn’t But I saw it On your face Someone asked you Where you were going You said, “I don’t know yet” [Pre-Chorus] You can play it cool I can play along But there’s one thing We both got wrong [Chorus] You looked first You looked first Don’t tell me I imagined it You looked first You looked first Now you’re trying Not to look again I wasn’t looking ’Til you did Now I can’t Unsee it You looked first You looked first So what are we Waiting for? [Verse 2] You moved closer When the room got louder Funny how That happens You said something I couldn’t hear So you said it In my ear I laughed You smiled Then looked down At your drink Like suddenly The glass was Very interesting I said, “You okay?” You said, “I’m fine” Then looked at me One more time [Pre-Chorus] You can play it cool I can play along But there’s one thing We both got wrong [Chorus] You looked first You looked first Don’t tell me I imagined it You looked first You looked first Now you’re trying Not to look again I wasn’t looking ’Til you did Now I can’t Unsee it You looked first You looked first So what are we Waiting for? [Bridge] Maybe I’m wrong Maybe you’re bored Maybe you just Like looking at me But you don’t move And I don’t move And somehow That’s enough You look again I catch you You laugh I laugh That’s when I know [Instrumental Break] [Instrumental] [Final Chorus] You looked first You looked first Don’t tell me I imagined it You looked first You looked first Now you’re trying Not to look again I wasn’t looking ’Til you did Now I can’t Unsee it You looked first You looked first So what are we Waiting for? You looked first I looked back That’s where We are now [Outro] You looked first Don’t blame me You looked first
