[Instrumental intro - one full verse] [verse 1] There once was Pawnee maid, A shy little Indian maid, Who sang so gay love songs all day, As on the plains she'd wile away the day. She loved a warrior brave, Her only heart she gave, But warrior gay rode off one day To fight so far away. [chorus] Now the stars shine tonight on little Red Wing, The trees are sighing, the night owl's crying, In distant lands her brave is sleeping, While Red Wing's weeping her heart away. [verse 2] She watched for him both day and night; She lit the cook fires bright; And under the stars each night, she'd lie so still And dream about him in night chill But when the braves had all returned, The soul of Red Wing yearned, For Red Wing's brave, her warrior gay Fell bravely in the fray. [chorus] Now the stars shine tonight on little Red Wing, The trees are sighing, the night owl's crying, In distant lands her brave is sleeping, While Red Wing's weeping her heart away.
