But something in the ocean wind kept calling from the west, so we followed roads through islands toward the edge we felt was best. [Verse 2] We stood beside the Southern Point, where land gives up to sea, and breathed the air of somewhere new, of what we might yet be. You said what we were thinking: "Are we finally done?" We smiled and watched the water knowing: 'We stopped looking north when our journey had begun.' [Chorus: layered duet] But I still wore that New York win-ter coat, all the way from Forty-Second Street. The sun was warm, the road was long, each mile made it heavier on my feet. You said, "Leave that heavy load behind." I said, "No, it belongs to northern win-ter at its best." And we carried that New York win-ter coat all the way down to Key West. [Verse 3] We wandered through the narrow lanes where painters, songs, and traders run, past escape artists slipping ropes beneath the setting sun. The wearer of that coat in Florida still just wanted to feel a bit more free, and you kept grinning each time you looked at me. Then you stopped a passing stranger and tipped an imaginary hat. [Verse 4] "Sir, would you be interested in a win-ter coat from New York, newly bought, not found?" The man looked at the mantle, then looked at me and frowned. You grinned and added, "Truth is, we won’t need it here. And we don’t even have a roof tonight, unless the Travellers’ Gods appear." [Chorus: layered duet] And I still wore that New York win-ter coat, all the way from Forty-Second Street. The sun was warm, the road was long, each mile made it heavier on my feet. You said, "Leave that heavy load behind." I said, "No, it belongs to northern win-ter at its best." And we carried that New York win-ter coat all the way down to Key West. [The Stranger:] "Come with me," the stranger said. He led us down a sandy path beneath the evening sky. A little cottage waited there where sea winds drifted by. "I'm leaving for a while," he said, "a musician's tour is calling me. Someday I could use that coat. I don't buy it and I don't take it for free. But if you want, you can stay here if you don’t mind until I find my way back home." The world went quiet for a moment, so kind. [Break] I looked across the porch. A rocking chair moved gently in the ocean breeze. "Does the rocking chair come with it?" The stranger smiled and nodded. (YES!) (KEYS!) We kissed. [Final Chorus: layered duet] So we traded that New York win-ter coat, bought from Forty-Second Street. For a little porch, a borrowed home, and waves that sang us both to sleep. You said, "Leave that heavy load behind." Turns out you were right, but only half or less. Because we traded that New York win-ter coat for a rocking chair in Key West. [Outro: layered duet] This night we watch the lights grow soft beyond the harbor line, listening to tender waves that fold into time. Just a porch with rocking chair that sways, where possibility gathers until it stays. For the first time since northern roads and plains, we are not heading somewhere else. Arrival here - just with us remains.
