“Kinuginu” (後朝) is a term from classical Japanese literature referring to the morning of parting after two lovers have spent the night together. In Heian-period courtship, a man would visit a woman at night, leave at daybreak, and afterward send her a letter or poem known as a kinuginu no fumi (後朝の文), “a letter of the morning after.” In the traditional world of waka poetry, every night of love is eventually followed by morning—and separation. But the protagonist of this song refuses that convention. No promises of a future. No words are needed. Just don’t let this night end yet. Kinuginu Misui (後朝未遂)— a love song about refusing to let the night end. [Verse 1 – Rap] Though I hide it, my longing stains the midnight moon. Bamboo blinds, sheer robes, fingertips, a single drop of dew. I’ll cross the Hill of Meeting; no barrier means a thing. If you won’t come to me, I’ll steal you even from my dreams. Even clouds upon the peaks are torn apart when the wind blows. Who decided morning means we have to leave? Let down your black hair. Put out the light. I don’t need your name. Just leave your fragrance behind. The lingering moon, the first light of dawn—still far away. Any reason to leave is farther still. One trace of agarwood clings to my sleeve. Will washing make it disappear? —Then try. [Pre-Hook] If meeting you had never happened at all, perhaps it would have been easier. Then tonight, we simply won’t let it end. [Hook] Come. The moon is watching. Come. The flowers will tell no one. Come. Until the night breaks. Sin and promises— turn them all into song. [Verse 2 – Rap] A love unheard of even in the age of the gods— its crimson runs deeper, even beneath the water. “Disheveled at dawn, lost in thoughts of you”— don’t make tomorrow’s me say such a thing. Thread of my life, if you must break, then break. If you can break, do it before I touch you. A hundred poems aren’t enough for a night like this. One verse, two, three—still not enough. We made a vow. Pretending we never did, we made a vow. “I will never forget you”— I don’t need promises that reach into some distant future. Only now. Only now. The ones who say that are always the ones who hate the dawn. [Chorus 2] If I cannot meet you, meet me in dreams. Even when the dream is over, don’t disturb this night just yet. Pretend you know nothing of the dawn. That drop upon your sleeve— don’t call it merely dew. Come. Come. Come, burning with longing. We meet, and someday we part. Until then, keep coming back to me. [Hook] Come. The moon is watching. Come. The flowers will tell no one. Come. Until the night breaks. Sin and promises— turn them all into song. [Break – Whisper / Cuts] Conceal. Reveal. Meet. Part. Love. Longing. Dream. Reality. —Which one is the sin? [Chorus 2] If I cannot meet you, meet me in dreams. Even when the dream is over, don’t disturb this night just yet. Pretend you know nothing of the dawn. That drop upon your sleeve— don’t call it merely dew. Come. Come. Come, burning with longing. We meet, and someday we part. Until then, keep coming back to me. [Final Hook] Come. With the moon behind you. Come. Take care not to tread upon the flowers. Come. Let only the rustle of your robes speak. Without a single word, make me understand everything. [Final Hook – Repeat] Come. With the moon behind you. Come. Take care not to tread upon the flowers. Come. Let only the rustle of your robes speak. Without a single word, make me understand everything. [Outro] How long will this last? I still don’t know your heart. My black hair, disheveled as dawn should come— still, it is night.
