The First Why

Hmm… Why does the fire rise? Why does the star not fall? I watched the sparks lift into dark, They didn’t run, they didn’t hide, I asked the night where they were going— The night just opened wide. No warning came, no thunder spoke, No voice said “don’t ask that here,” The world didn’t break from wondering— It leaned a little near. I traced the moon across the water, Same shape, never quite the same, I asked it how it knew to follow, It smiled and did not name. Every “why” became a doorway, Not a threat, not something wrong, The answers hummed like sleeping animals— Alive, but taking long. Why didn’t frighten what we loved, Why didn’t steal our ground, Every question made more room For what we hadn’t found. Not knowing wasn’t danger then, It was how the light got in— We didn’t break the world with why, We widened it. The elders didn’t hush the asking, They smiled and passed the flame, Said “Stories walk ahead of truth, But both are fed the same.” Some answers came as constellations, Some arrived as song, Some took a lifetime circling Just to prove they’d been there all along. What if the question is the path? What if the search is kind? What if the future isn’t known— Because it’s listening for our mind? Why became our invitation, Invitation… Not a crack but opening seam, Opening seam… We questioned our predictions, Let wonder take the lead— And in the space we didn’t fill, Something new could breathe. Why not this? Why not more?
