Hey. You want the promotion? ...Do I? Boss caught me halfway to lunch, said they like the way I work. Got an opening upstairs, little more money, lot more words. New title. New badge. Maybe even my own key. Plus a phone that rings at night for things that used to not involve me. I said, "Can I think about it?" He said, "Sure." Then checked his watch like there was a right answer. Everybody says move up. Nobody says what you're moving toward. I got a good enough job, good enough chair, coffee tastes bad but it's always there. Clock in. Do mine. Leave around five. Don't need my name on the door. I know where the door is. Good enough job. Good enough pay. Enough left over to still have a day. Keep the title. Keep the climb. I'm doing alright on company time. Team lead Dave got promoted last May, stopped eating lunch downstairs. Now he's sending, "Quick question" at ten-thirty from somewhere. Used to talk about movies. Now he says "circle back." Got a nicer parking spot though. So... there's that. Break room cake says CONGRATULATIONS. Nobody knows who brought it. Half the icing's on the lid. Still counts. I got a good enough job, good enough chair, coffee tastes bad but it's always there. Clock in. Do mine. Leave around five. Don't need my name on the door. I know where the door is. Good enough job. Good enough pay. Enough left over to still have a day. Keep the title. Keep the climb. I'm doing alright on company time. Maybe ambition changed addresses. Maybe it lives somewhere outside this building now. I still want things. Just not a bigger desk. Good enough job. Good enough day. Did what I came for. Got out okay. Inbox full. That's tomorrow's problem. For once, I think I'll let it be one. Good enough job. Nothing profound. Elevator up. I'm heading down. Keep the title. I'll keep tonight. See you tomorrow. Probably on time. Five-oh-three. Parking lot. Best meeting all day.
