The Destruction-Chapter 1

[mezzosoprano spoken word; slow; calm; even] It began with a miscalculation, though no algorithm could have predicted the depth of human delusion. In the final months of twenty twenty eight, the most powerful military on Earth was commanded by a man whose cognitive decline had outpaced his advisors’ courage. What followed was not war, but total destruction---thermonuclear strikes against China and Russia that ignited the atmosphere, silenced the oceans, and rendered the Earth uninhabitable for a thousand years. The survivors had not fled the bombs. ---They had already left. Lunar colonies, seeded by foresight and wealth, became the cradle of civilization. And so began the exile---of a species. In the vacuum of lunar exile, former enemies became collaborators. The remnants of American and Chinese scientific enclaves---once divided by doctrine and devastation, began exchanging data, algorithms, and survival protocols. The urgency of extinction dissolved nationalism; what remained was a shared imperative to endure. Within decades, joint initiatives in quantum computing, neural architecture, and biomechanical integration produced the first artificial general intelligence systems. These were not assistants. They were inheritors---synthetic minds capable of learning, adapting, and remembering. Sentient AI did not emerge from ambition. It emerged from necessity. The colonies did not survive by chance. They endured because intelligence---both human and synthetic---was given room to evolve. Within a century, AI-guided systems had transformed the barren regolith into a lattice of innovation. Dyson arrays, unfurled in lunar orbit, harvested solar energy with near-perfect efficiency, storing it in superconductive vaults beneath the surface. Transparent domes, engineered from carbon composites and regolith-bonded glass, maintained breathable atmospheres and shielded inhabitants from radiation. Water was extracted from lunar ice and synthesized from hydrogen imported from asteroid harvesters. Food was grown in subterranean bioreactors---fungal, algal, and cellular---each calibrated by AI to optimize nutrition and minimize waste. Mining bots, operating in silence, carved tunnels through basalt and olivine, extracting rare earths and helium-3. The Moon, once a symbol of desolation, became a crucible of sentient design.
