“Barbie Zombies” is a dark, sarcastic song about a popular but toxic “queen bee” who controls a group of followers that blindly adopt her opinions, anger, gossip, and grudges. The “Barbie zombies” represent people who look confident & put-together on the outside but have little independent thought underneath, going along with whatever the leader says so they can belong. The song explores social exclusion, rumors, backhanded cruelty, & the fear of becoming the next target, while ultimately asking what remains of someone’s identity when their opinions are borrowed from the crowd. The ending drives home the central idea: once the queen disappears, her followers are still standing there, waiting to be told what to do and think. [Intro – spoken, eerie, mechanical] Barbie zombies. Remote-controlled haters. Followers of the loser queen bee. Pretty little followers with nothing of their own to say. [Verse 1] She lifts a finger, they turn their heads. She drops a whisper, they repeat what she said. She finds a target, they all join in. Nobody asks why, nobody asks should we? Barbie zombies No questions asked, no thoughts of their own. They borrow her anger, they borrow her seething tone. If she says, “I hate her,” A “Me too Chorus chimes in” Funny how conviction comes from the queen to you. [Pre-Chorus] They don’t need a reason, they just need a queen. They don’t need the truth, they just need someone to shame. [Chorus] Barbie zombies, remote-controlled haters, followers of the loser queen bee. Pretty little followers, all dressed up and smiling, saying whatever she tells them to believe. Barbie zombies, smiling while they lie. [Verse 2] Backhanded compliments, sweet little knives. “I’m only concerned,” the Barbies say, while they sharpen their lies. A rumor gets repeated, a whisper gets spread, then suddenly everybody knows something she said. They leave you outside while they lock the door. Then laugh when you wonder what you’re excluded for. They’ll call it coincidence, they’ll call it an accident — anything but admitting they’re following her lead. [Pre-Chorus] They police the social doorway, decide who belongs. If the queen says “get rid of her,” they all play along. [Chorus] Barbie zombies, remote-controlled haters, followers of the loser queen bee. Plastic little soldiers in designer disguises, marching to the beat of the little dumber Barbie zombies, smiling while they bite. Pretty little alligator mites who need to be told who’s wrong and who’s right. [Bridge – darker, slower] Maybe they’re afraid she’ll turn on them. Maybe they need her to call them friends. Maybe it’s easier to point and sneer than to wonder why they’re losers with cause. One pulls the string, Four move in line. Borrowed opinions feel almost like mine. But strip away the leader, cut the Pinocchio cords— what’s left of a follower without another’s vocal chords? [Breakdown – whispered / distorted] She points. They stare. She laughs. They laugh. She hates. They hate. She leaves. They wait. [Final Chorus – explosive] Barbie zombies, remote-controlled haters, followers of the loser queen bee. Plastic little soldiers, empty little vessels, protecting the losers throne. Barbie zombies, with checked out spines too scared to think too hollow to disagree. Barbie zombies— all dressed alike. When the queen stops talking, they don’t know what to dislike. [Outro – mechanical whisper] Remote control disconnected. The Queen has left the building. Barbie zombies… still waiting for instructions.
