Chiaroscuro is an Italian art term meaning "light-dark" β it originated in Renaissance painting to describe the technique of using strong contrasts between light and shadow to create depth and drama. Artists like Caravaggio and Rembrandt were masters of it. The term later extended beyond painting into photography, film, and now music to describe that same interplay of contrast β loud and soft, heavy and delicate, light and dark.
