32. Do Not Leave Me Again | Act IV: The Last Ways Home

V6

[The Scene] As the Pequod sails away from the Rachel and her desperate search for a missing child, Pip remains close to Ahab, whose earlier kindness has given him a fragile sense of safety. The thought of another boy abandoned somewhere upon the open sea awakens memories of his own terrifying ordeal. Within Ahab’s cabin, every movement towards the door makes Pip fear that he will once again be left alone. He begs the captain to stay, clinging to the reassurance of his presence, but Ahab’s thoughts remain drawn towards Moby Dick. Their brief bond cannot overcome the obsession driving the voyage, and Pip faces the possibility of losing the only protection he now trusts. As the act closes, his frightened pleading leaves the fate of the Pequod overshadowed by the suffering of its most vulnerable sailor. [Verse 1] The cabin lamp is burning through the night, I watch its little circle of warm light. I sit beside your chair, afraid to roam, Your hand has made this narrow room a home. [Verse 2] I saw the whaleboat dwindle on the sea, I called, but none of them came back for me. The water stretched beyond my failing sight, And every wave grew darker than the night. [Chorus] Do not leave me again, stay here with me, Your hand is all the shelter I can see. The sea comes back whenever footsteps fade, I fear the lonely silence they have made. [Verse 3] I hear the footsteps hurry overhead, And feel the cold sea rising by my bed. When someone calls, I think you've gone away, I search your face to beg you still to stay. [Verse 4] My tambourine lies silent by the chair, I touch its little bells; they tremble there. I try the tune that used to make me brave, But hear it drown beneath another wave. [Chorus] Do not leave me again, stay here with me, Your hand is all the shelter I can see. The sea comes back whenever footsteps fade, I fear the lonely silence they have made. [Verse 5] You know what pain can take and leave behind, I feel the shape of water in my mind. You held my hand when I could hardly speak, And let me rest beside you, small and weak. [Verse 6] I know the white whale draws you from this room, And dread the silence waiting in the gloom. I hear your chair scrape softly on the floor, And feel the empty water rise once more. [Outro] I cannot make the ocean cease its roar, Or hold your footsteps here beside the door. I beg you, stay until the morning light, For I am still alone within that night.
