No banners flew from the towers, and no guards stood upon the battlements—only the scent of blood hung in the air. What they found resembled the creature from the chicken coop, yet everything here was on a far greater scale... Had they the luxury of inaction, Terry would likely have said: "Far too big." But time was precious, and here, it was pressing... They took the lower way, through stone and rusted air, a door left open just enough to tell what waited there. The dark had stained the walls, the silence pressed too deep, no living breath remained, yet nothing there could sleep. [Pre-Chorus] There are places built for watching. There are places meant to warn. Northwatch kept its eyes wide open long after hope was gone. [Chorus] Ashes of Northwatch, blood beneath the stone, bones around the circles where no prayer should have been known. Ashes of Northwatch, black against the flame, they broke what still was holding, but the walls remembered names. [Verse 2] She read the marks in silence, the lines beneath the grime, the shape of something twisted and dragged beyond its time. He stood where steel was useful, where shadow met the door, while something moved beneath them that should not breathe once more. The anchor strained and splintered, the darkness tore apart, she held the binding steady, he drove the blade straight through its heart. [Pre-Chorus] Some battles end with shouting. Some end when all goes still. And some are only finished when there's nothing left to kill. [Chorus] Ashes of Northwatch, blood beneath the stone, bones around the circles where no prayer should have been known. Ashes of Northwatch, black against the flame, they broke what still was holding, but the walls remembered names. [Bridge] Fir and smoke, blackened tar, burn it down to grey. No whisper in the embers. No shadow left to stay. She sank beside the roadside, power burned down to the bone. He stayed awake beside her, keeping watch there on his own. [Verse 3] The tower held its silence, the night reclaimed the hill, the breach had lost its hunger, the room at last lay still. But darkness leaves a residue when magic cuts too deep, and not all wounds are visible when tired bodies sleep. [Final Chorus] Ashes of Northwatch, smoke against the dawn, the thing that fed the darkness was broken and was gone. Ashes of Northwatch, cold beneath the sky, she carried out the burden, he carried what survived. And if the tower keeps its secrets, let the stone hold what it must. They walked in through the darkness. They walked out through ash and dust. [Outro] No horn. No cry. No warning left to give. Only fire in the ruins. Only two who still live.
