I Thought It Might Be You

Of all of them, I wondered If someday it might be you. The strong quiet older brother, The one who thought things through. You stood up for me once years ago When whispers started moving through. I remembered that. And somewhere deep inside me I thought it might be you. Then came that night in September, And you said something I still hear. You compared me to your father-in-law, And the meaning landed clear. I knew the stories. I Knew the anger. I Knew exactly what you meant— A man who thought helping you Gave him ownership in return. And suddenly that man was me. Erick. That one hurt Because what had I asked for? A thirty second video. And I offered to split the profits Against a hundred thousand dollars Already poured into a shop To help you build and work and grow, With tens of thousands still to come For power, a bathroom and more And somehow asking for a thirty second video Put me in the same category As a man you couldn't stand. I searched myself that night. But Erick— That comparison never fit. Still, I thought it might be you. When the anger settled down, When everybody stopped defending And finally looked around. I thought the strong and quiet brother Might be strong enough to say, "This has gone too far. We're family. There has to be another way." I didn't need you on my side. I just hoped someone would want the truth. And of all the people standing there, I thought it might be you. Fall came and went Then November broke apart. Still somehow I didn't put you In the hardest corner of my heart. Maybe because I remembered That time long ago When something wasn't right And you were brave enough to say no. Maybe because you were the oldest. Maybe because you seemed so calm. Maybe because I thought eventually You'd see how much had all gone wrong. I kept a little hope alive. Not much. But some. And it had your name all over it. I pictured you becoming The one who gathered everyone. Not deciding who was guilty, Not pretending nothing had been done. Just saying, "We're not throwing away a family. We're going to sit down and talk. We're going to listen to each other. We're going to find out what went wrong." You didn't have to vindicate me. You didn't have to prove them wrong. I just thought you might be the one Who helped us find our way back home. And then came the email to the realtor. The CC&Rs. Just words on a screen. But somehow they answered The question. First came shock. Then anger. Then something quieter. Acceptance. Oh. It isn't going to be Erick. You weren't standing somewhere neutral, Waiting for the dust to clear. You weren't quietly holding open Some little path from there to here. Whatever brought you to that decision, Whatever you believed was true, That email told us loud and clear It wasn't going to be you. You had chosen where you stood. What you were willing to do- And it wasn't good. There was something else beneath it— Something harder to explain: You helped find the property. You and Aaron asked us to buy it, You chose what we would build, Made the plans and the arrangements While I kept paying every bill. Then after all that money, All that building, all we did at your request— You produced CC&Rs That said the shop should never Have been built there in the first place. Erick— You knew the neighborhood. You lived there. You are a more honorable man than that. I thought. I really thought it might be you. The steady one, the oldest son. The one who once had seen enough To say when something shouldn't be done. I thought when anger lost its volume And there was nothing left to prove, You might be the one who said, "Enough. We love each other. Let's find a way to move." Maybe that was never yours to carry. Maybe I hoped too much of you. But of all the hopes I held onto, One of the last Was you. First shock. Then anger. Then acceptance. Not hatred. Not revenge. Just finally understanding: The person I'd imagined Might someday help build the bridge Wasn't building one. And that was when I knew— It wasn't going to be you.
