Boudica — The Woman Before the Legend After the fall of Camulodunum, Boudica's rebellion continued south. Londinium was one of the most important Roman settlements in Britain, a growing centre of trade and commerce built along the Thames. Its streets were filled with merchants, officials and travellers from across the Roman world. It represented the wealth, administration and influence of Rome in Britain. But the rebellion was moving closer. The Roman governor Suetonius Paulinus was returning from Wales, while the people of Londinium could only wait and wonder what would come next. Londinium marks the moment when the rebellion reaches one of Rome's most important centres in Britain. The old roads lead south. And Londinium is waiting. - The Wound (I) - We Are Not Alone (II) - Camulodunum (III) - Londinium (IV) - Verulamium (V) - Paulerspury (VI) - One Last Fight (VII) ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ Londinium beneath a fading sky Red roofs burning in the morning light The gates stand open to the road I saw them pull the standards in Down by the river gate Their shields went dark in morning rain And left the stones to wait Londinium held its bronze and wine Its ledgers, locks and doors I watched Rome fold its bright hands back Like it had done before Something in the way they left Struck like a name I knew A promise dressed in polished words Then broken clean in two Londinium, now you know Now you know what Rome lets go (look at Rome) Londinium, look at Rome I know that empty hand I know that road You thought the walls would hold you Now there’s nowhere left to go I remember iron in the sun The cold of broken vows A hand that once called me its own Then turned its face away They taught me this with fire and lash They taught me what remains When those who promise shelter first Are gone before the flames They build you up with polished words Then leave you with the rain A borrowed peace, a guarded gate A wound beneath the name Londinium, now you know Now you know what Rome lets go (look at Rome) Londinium, look at Rome I know that empty hand I know that road You thought the walls would hold you Now you stand alone I do not come to lift you out I do not bless your pain I only stand beyond your walls And watch the dark descend I knew that kind of leaving I knew that kind of grace Rome keeps the hand And leaves the wound Then turns away its face Londinium, now you know Now you know what Rome lets go Londinium, look at Rome I know that empty hand I know that road Londinium, now you know What Rome has left behind What they built to stand forever Will not survive the night The city waits. The smoke lies low. And Rome is already gone. © 2026 Written by Dhow All rights reserved.
