They've Said

They’ve said cracks are where the light comes in. Forgetting that to see the sun, I had to first be broken. Forgetting how the world spins back to dark again, Forgetting that the light I have is mine, though pain has stolen. They’ve said they’ll fill the cracks with gold. Claiming that gold will make me beautiful, make me glow. Claiming these cracks add value, make me something more, But they don’t see the pieces lost, the ones I can’t restore. Oh, they’ve said it all to make it seem, That what they’ve done ain’t what it seems. To keep their hands clean, to ease their shame, They twist my hurt to play their game. They make my breaking sound divine, But it’s just their way to blur the line. They’ve said time will heal, that I’ll move on, Ignoring that healing starts where harm was done. Ignoring that scars remain, their keepsakes of my pain, Ignoring the dreams and plans they’ve swept away, like rain. They’ve said I’m stronger now, unbroken, whole. Said their breaking didn’t take a toll. They said the cracks gave me wisdom, gave me strength to stand, But they don’t see what’s slipping, falling through like grains of sand. Oh, they’ve said it all to make it seem, That what they’ve done ain’t what it seems. To keep their hands clean, to ease their shame, They twist my hurt to play their game. They make my breaking sound divine, But it’s just their way to blur the line. They’ve said, “What doesn’t kill you makes you strong.” Believing their hands shaped who I’ve become. Believing that survival is some kind of gift, But they don’t feel the weight, they don’t carry the rift. They’ve said so many things, but never once, Never once have they answered why they had to break me so. Why they didn’t choose to light my way, Why they shattered me, left me in disarray. And they’ve never said, they were sorry, never said, they was wrong. Just call me ungrateful, like I don’t know where I belong. But I’ll say this now, though they’ll never see, I’ve been whole, I’ve been beautiful, despite what they’ve done to me. Not because of them, no, But in spite of all they’ve said.
