TIME 015 – Two Species of Man | The Time Machine
(Verse 1) The Traveller shaped a theory from the evidence he found, Of gentle lives above him and machinery underground. The future was no paradise perfected by one plan, But something far more ancient in the history of man. (Verse 2) The wealthy once had risen from the labour at their feet, And built a world of comfort far removed from toil and heat. Their children became Eloi, soft beneath the open sky, While those who served below them learned in darkness to survive. (Chorus) Two species came from mankind where one people stood before, One lived among the gardens while one laboured evermore. The ages carved division into muscle, bone and span, And privilege and labour made two species out of man. (Verse 3) The Eloi bore the imprint of a life without demand, No need for strength or cunning in the safety of the land. The Morlocks kept the engines and inherited the night, Their bodies shaped for tunnels far removed from warmth and light. (Verse 4) What once had been a class divide became a deeper scar, Until the two descendants stood divided wide and far. The struggle had not vanished, it had merely changed its face, And time had turned inequality to difference of race. (Chorus) Two species came from mankind where one people stood before, One lived among the gardens while one laboured evermore. The ages carved division into muscle, bone and span, And privilege and labour made two species out of man. (Bridge) The Traveller saw history continued in the strain, The ease of one secured upon another people's pain. The future had remembered every barrier and ban, Then hardened social distance into different kinds of man. (Outro) He looked across the sunlight while the hidden engines ran, And saw the final outcome of division born in man. No perfect age awaited where all conflict met its end, Two branches of humanity had broken where they bend.
