I Talk to Myself Because He Gets Me
[Intro] "Chris." Yeah? "What are you doing?" I don't know yet. "You've been standing there for five minutes." I'm thinking. "About what?" ...I don't know yet. Okay. Good meeting. [Verse 1] I talk to myself 'cause the dude gets me, Never says, "Who's Chris?" when I say, "You know Chris, see?" I can start in the middle, skip half the plot, He already knows every thought I forgot. Walking down the hallway having full debates, One of me is early, the other one's late. One says, "Let it go." One says, "Absolutely not." Third guy in my head says, "Wait... what are we talking about?" I've won arguments nobody ever heard, Lost a couple too without saying a word. Made a brilliant point while sweeping the floor, Then forgot the whole thing when I walked through the door. [Chorus] I talk to myself because he gets me, Same strange frequency, same old TV. I say, "You know what I mean?" He says, "Actually, I do." Finally found somebody who can follow me through. We laugh, we argue, we occasionally agree, Sometimes I tell myself, "Man, you gotta quit listening to me." I talk to myself because he gets me... Most of the time. [Verse 2] Sometimes I'm driving and we're solving the world, Big revelations getting mentally unfurled. Got life figured out at a red traffic light, Green comes on... Forgot it. That's all right. I've practiced conversations that never took place, Had the perfect comeback three days too late. I've explained my position to an empty room, Then changed my own mind halfway through. That's awkward. When your opponent is you and somehow you still lose. But maybe there's something healthy in that, Letting your own thoughts come sit on the mat. Turn 'em around, see where they're from, Ask, "Is this wisdom... or am I just being dumb?" [Chorus] I talk to myself because he gets me, Same strange frequency, same old TV. I say, "You know what I mean?" He says, "Unfortunately, I do." We've been stuck inside this head since nineteen-seventy-six. We laugh, we argue, we occasionally agree, Sometimes I tell myself, "Chris, don't take advice from me." I talk to myself because he gets me... Most of the time. [Breakdown] Me: We should probably pray about this. Also me: Absolutely. Me: Right now? Also me: Well... Me: See, this is exactly what I'm talking about. [Verse 3] But somewhere underneath all the comedy, There's another voice that isn't quite me. Doesn't shout louder, doesn't fight for the floor, Just waits in the quiet till I open the door. Sometimes while I'm busy explaining my case, A little truth walks in with uncomfortable grace. "Chris, you sure you're right?" ... Well, I was five seconds ago. Maybe knowing yourself ain't trusting every thought, Maybe wisdom starts by questioning the ones you've got. Maybe growing means learning when your inner voice is true, And when your inner voice desperately needs a second point of view. So I bring those thoughts before the One Who knew my mind before it had begun. And somehow prayer turns my monologue Into something bigger than me talking to me. [Final Chorus] I talk to myself because he gets me, But thank God I'm not my only company. When I say, "Lord, You know what I mean?" He says more with silence than I ever could speak. So I'll laugh with myself, correct myself, occasionally disagree, But I don't have to make myself the highest authority. I talk to myself because he gets me... But I talk to God because He knows me. [Outro] "Chris." Yeah? "That was actually pretty deep." Thanks. "You wanna write it down before you forget?" ... Write what down? Exactly.
