I built my ending under a bronze sky Laid down the feathers I no longer need The evening turned and gathered around me Like it already knew what I would be I felt the heat begin beneath me Heard the old world falling away And when there was nothing left to carry I let the last of yesterday fade WHEN THE PHOENIX RISES FROM THE ASH BELOW WHEN THE PHOENIX RISES NOTHING STAYS THE SAME NO LOOKING BACK NO SECOND LIFE WHEN THE PHOENIX RISES I RISE For one long moment there was nothing No breath above, no ground below Then somewhere underneath the ruin Something unfamiliar began to grow One beat became another One wing unfolded into two The shape I left behind me Could never hold what I became WHEN THE PHOENIX RISES FROM THE ASH BELOW WHEN THE PHOENIX RISES NOTHING STAYS THE SAME NO LOOKING BACK NO SECOND LIFE WHEN THE PHOENIX RISES I RISE Don't wait for what you knew That shape won't answer now The air feels different From this height The earth looks smaller Looking down No hand reached in No door swung wide Something ended Something learned To fly WHEN THE PHOENIX RISES FROM THE ASH BELOW WHEN THE PHOENIX RISES LET THE WHOLE WORLD KNOW NO LOOKING BACK NO SECOND LIFE WHEN THE PHOENIX RISES I RISE What fell Never had to rise The same
