The Rabbit Is Only A Rabbit

V6

THE RABBIT IS ONLY A RABBIT [Verse 1] White walls, white shoes, white clock with no hands, They keep asking Alice if she understands. A paper cup moon and a fluorescent sun, Door locks behind her— “Treatment’s begun.” Doctor with a clipboard, kindness rehearsed, Says, “Tell me what you saw when the whole world reversed.” Alice bites her tongue till she tastes something red, “There was a rabbit.” He circles what she said. [Pre-Chorus] “No tunnels. No kingdoms. No queen dressed in black. No watches, no voices, No looking-glass cracks. You want to go home? Then give us the answer.” Alice whispers— [Chorus] “The rabbit is only a rabbit. The rabbit is only a rabbit. No message inside it, No doorway behind it, No reason on earth I should follow or grab it. The rabbit is only a rabbit.” Say it like you mean it. Say it till it's true. Say it for the doctors Who know more than you. “The rabbit is only a rabbit.” And maybe they'll give me my shoes. --- [Verse 2] Tuesday tastes exactly like Monday did, She counts ceiling tiles like a good little kid. Group room confession underneath buzzing lights: “What is real, Alice?” She says, “Whatever you write.” The girl down the hallway says, “Don't fight the tide. They don't need you certain, just certified.” Then she taps on the wall—three knocks, then two— Alice hears scratching From Room 302. [Pre-Chorus] “No tunnels. No kingdoms. No tea at half-past. The things that you dreamed Are a symptom that's passed. You want your own clothes? You want your old habits? Then say it again.” So Alice says— [Chorus] “The rabbit is only a rabbit. The rabbit is only a rabbit. Its eyes aren't a warning, It doesn't know my name, And clocks don't run backward No matter the panic. The rabbit is only a rabbit.” I know how to say it. I'm learning the tune. Morning medication, Dinner at noon. “The rabbit is only a rabbit.” Now please let me out of this room. --- [Post-Chorus] Rabbit, rabbit— Nothing to see. Rabbit, rabbit— Nothing but me. Rabbit, rabbit— Four little feet. Then why do I hear them Running underneath? --- [Verse 3] Her mother comes Sunday with tears in her eyes, Says, “Baby, just tell them whatever they like.” Alice says, “What if pretending is part of the trap?” Her mother squeezes tighter: “Just get yourself back.” But which Alice? The one before falling? The one after pills? The one who stopped screaming? The one sitting still? If sanity's a password Printed on a page, Is freedom being free— Or saying the right thing To whoever holds the cage? --- [Bridge] So Alice stands straight when the doctors arrive. Hair neatly brushed. Voice quiet. Eyes dry. “Do you understand now?” She smiles. “I do.” “What was the rabbit?” ... “A rabbit.” “Nothing more?” “Nothing more.” The pen makes a check. The lock makes a sound. And somewhere inside her, Something goes underground. --- [Final Chorus] “The rabbit is only a rabbit. The rabbit is only a rabbit. No prophecy, portal, No beautiful madness, No universe hiding inside of the static. The rabbit is only a rabbit.” I said it correctly. You opened the door. You gave back my jacket, My name, and my phone. The rabbit is only a rabbit. I don't chase rabbits anymore. --- [Outro] She walks past reception. Past security glass. Past the sign that says RECOVERY IS POSSIBLE. Outside— October air. Cars. People. Ordinary morning. Alice closes her eyes. Breathes. Opens them. Across the parking lot, Something white slips behind a tree. Two long ears. A flicker. Gone. Alice doesn't follow. She smiles to herself and whispers: “The rabbit is only a rabbit.” Three steps toward home. Then, under her breath— “But nobody ever asked what the rabbit thinks of Alice.”
