LUCIFER TOOK THE BUS [INTRO – fragile clean guitar, soft amp hum, distant city noise, no drums at first] [Male vocal, dry, tired, almost spoken] Lucifer took the bus downtown. [brief pause] No thunder. No smoke. Nobody even looked up. [clean guitar continues for two bars] [VERSE 1 – quiet melodic guitar, warm bass, restrained drums, natural weary vocal] He wore a second-hand black coat, Had rain collecting in his shoes. Bought coffee from a tired girl Who said, “You look like bad news.” He smiled and said, [half-spoken, slight amusement] “I used to be.” [short guitar pause] She shrugged and counted change, Said, “Join the queue, sweetheart. Everybody is.” Outside, a man was screaming At somebody on the phone. Lucifer watched him for a minute, Then decided to walk home. [PRE-CHORUS – tension rising, bass louder, guitar becomes slightly dissonant] But every street had something He had never learned in Hell. [small feedback swell] People hurting one another And pretending all was well. [ABRUPT BREAK – clean guitar suddenly cuts] [CHORUS – explosive dirty fuzz guitars, loose heavy drums, wide distorted sound, vocal louder but not screamed] Lucifer came down to see How wicked we could be. He brought temptation in his coat But nobody needed any. He said, “I offered pride, I offered greed, I whispered every ugly need.” [brief stop – drums cut] We laughed and said, [half-spoken] “That’s sweet of you... [violent fuzz hit] ...but we already do.” [POST-CHORUS – noisy feedback, broken guitar chords, then sudden silence] [VERSE 2 – back to clean guitar, almost beautiful, vocal calm and detached] He met a preacher near the station Selling heaven by the hour. The preacher spoke of mercy While counting coins behind the tower. Lucifer said, [spoken] “Do you believe it?” The preacher said, “Believe in what?” “The things you tell them.” [small pause] The preacher laughed. “Does it matter very much?” [drums enter heavier] Down the road a businessman Was firing twenty men. Said, “Nothing personal, boys, We’ll call when things improve again.” Lucifer asked, “Do you feel guilty?” [everything drops except bass] The man looked genuinely confused. “Guilty?” [harsh guitar scrape] Then checked his watch And ordered something new. [CHORUS – dirtier than before, harsher fuzz, unstable drums] Lucifer came down to see How wicked we could be. He brought temptation in his coat But nobody needed any. He said, “I offered pride, I offered greed, I whispered every ugly need.” We laughed and said, “That’s sweet of you... [one-second silence] ...but we already do.” [BRIDGE – stripped down, clean guitar picking, almost tender] He sat beside an old man Feeding pigeons in the rain. The old man said, [spoken quietly] “You’re him, aren’t you?” Lucifer said, “I’ve had many names.” The old man smiled. “My wife died last December. My son hasn’t called in years. The landlord raised the rent again. I’ve nothing left to fear.” [long pause] Lucifer looked uncomfortable. [BUILD – guitar slowly becomes detuned and unstable] Hell was easier. [ABRUPT SONIC COLLAPSE – violent fuzz, feedback scream, broken rhythm, chaotic drums] People screamed. People burned. People knew exactly why. Up here everybody smiled While something underneath them died. [CHAOTIC BREAK – jagged guitar, stop-start drums] And somewhere in a supermarket A mother slapped her child. Somebody filmed it. [drums stop] Somebody laughed. [guitar feedback] Somebody posted it online. [DEAD SILENCE – 1 second] [FINAL VERSE – very soft, almost beautiful clean guitar, minimal drums] By morning he was sitting At the terminal alone. Watching strangers step around A man sleeping on the stone. A little girl looked up at him And asked him where he’d been. He said, [soft spoken] “Somewhere far below you.” She said, “Is everybody mean?” [long pause] He almost laughed. He almost lied. Then whispered, “No. Not everybody.” [FINAL CHORUS – full band, bittersweet melody, wide guitars, less aggressive than previous chorus but emotionally heavier] Lucifer came down to see How wicked we could be. He brought temptation in his coat But nobody needed any. He said, “I offered pride, I offered greed, I whispered every ugly need.” We laughed and said, “That’s sweet of you... [distortion swells underneath] ...but we already do.” [OUTRO – drums disappear, clean guitar returns, amplifier hum, distant traffic] At sunrise Lucifer went home. He left no fire. No plague. No sign. Just one sentence Written underneath a railway line: [almost whispered] “You blame me for the worst in you. I wish it had been mine.” [LONG PAUSE] Then underneath, in smaller handwriting: [very quiet spoken vocal] “Hell is awful. But at least... we know we’re in it.” [FINAL SOUND – one beautiful clean chord suddenly breaks into harsh feedback and cuts dead]
