They say if you get on the island in the sky, some will see — and some won’t. My cousin Trent told me that when we were eating Hot Pockets at 3 a.m. in his mom’s basement. He had this weird look in his eye, like he’d seen a ghost. Or maybe he just had heartburn. Either way, I shoulda listened. But I didn’t. Because I’m dumb. Dumb like a box of pudding. Anyway, it all started when I found a ripped piece of cardboard behind the dumpster at Dollar Slime. It had this weird drawing on it. Like a hand… but boxier. And written in Sharpie (or blood, but probably Sharpie) was one word: “KNUCKLES” Now, I ain’t the sharpest spoon in the knife drawer, but I knew that was spooky. Still, I picked it up and folded it around my hand like a makeshift glove. It fit perfect. Like it was made for me. Or maybe… FOR MY SOUL. The minute I punched the air, thunder cracked. And then I heard it: the cardboard whisper. “PUNCH THE SKY. FIND THE TRUTH. BECOME… BOXED.” I thought it was just my gamer headphones glitching, but the voice came from inside my head. Like, echoing in my frontal brain-lobe. So I did what any rational idiot would do. I punched straight up. And that’s when I flew. Like, literally hovered. I was going up. Faster than your mom on dial-up. Past the clouds. Past the seagulls. Past a guy eating a hot dog on a blimp. And then I saw it. The Island in the Sky. It was made of old pizza boxes and broken Roombas, and everything smelled like armpit and cinnamon. I landed in the center, where a circle of shadowy figures stood. Their hands were all made of cardboard too. One stepped forward. He had a cape made of Lunchables wrappers. “You have the Knuckles,” he rasped. “The prophecy unfolds like a discount burrito.” I wanted to ask what was happening, but then my arms turned into cardboard. Like, real fast. My fingers flapped in the wind like sad brown noodles. “Some will see…” the shadow-man whispered. “…and some won’t!” the others screamed in unison. That’s when I blacked out. I woke up back in Trent’s basement, Hot Pocket melted to my forehead. But my hands… my hands were still cardboard. No one believes me. But every night, I hear them whispering through the folds: “Punch the sky again… or be folded forever…” So yeah. That’s my story. If you find a cardboard glove behind the dumpster, don’t put it on. Or do. I don’t care. I’m just a guy with flappy box hands and a haunted soul. But remember… Some will see… and some won’t. 🥴✊📦
