Verse 1 The storm had spent its fury Somewhere out beyond the bay, And the Sea of Rumours settled As the night gave way to grey. I stood upon the shoreline Where the black rocks met the foam, Watching waves erase the footprints Of the roads that led from home. Behind me lay a thousand tales, A thousand voices strong, Each one certain they were right, Though half of them were wrong. Ahead there stood a lighthouse On a cliff above the sea, And for reasons I can't rightly say, It seemed to beckon me. Verse 2 I climbed the winding pathway As the morning slowly broke, Past rusted rails and weathered stones And chimneys breathing smoke. The keeper sat beside the lamp, A quiet sort of bloke. He didn't speak in riddles. He didn't sell me hope. I said, "Sir, I've crossed strange countries And heard wonders by the score. But everyone seems certain They have found what they're looking for." He stared out at the water. Then finally replied: "If truth is really truthful, son, It won't need somewhere to hide." Chorus For truth needn't fear questions, And faith needn't fear light. The stars don't fear the morning, Nor the darkness fear the night. The sea don't mind you sounding it. The map don't fear review. So if a thing is really true, What harm can questions do? Verse 3 I thought about old Harold And the dates he'd worked all out. I thought about the holy sheep Folks gathered round about. I thought of all the relics And the signs seen in the rain, And all the things that somehow grew Each time they were explained. I thought of Me-Mate-Says Mick And all he'd heard before, And Deacon Ninety-Eight Who was nearly always sure. And suddenly it struck me Like sunlight through the gloom. Perhaps the strongest things in life Still make a little room. Chorus For truth needn't fear questions, And faith needn't fear light. The sun comes up each morning And survives the day just fine. A story isn't holier, A claim isn't improved, By wrapping it in certainty Before it's even proved. Bridge I've crossed the Sea of WhatsApp, Climbed the Hills of Someone Said, Sailed beyond the Forwarded Isles And used my loaf instead. I've stood where shadows looked like giants, Watched rumours fill the skies, Seen angels turn to lighthouses Before my very eyes. And every mile has taught me What the wisest sailors knew: Things often grow in darkness, Until you sail right through. Big Musical Theatre Build So raise the lamp a little higher, Let every question come. The truth has nothing much to lose. It's falsehoods that must run. Ask gently. Look closely. Never fear the light. And don't mistake loud certainty For being right. Final Chorus For truth needn't fear questions, And faith needn't fear light. The lighthouse doesn't argue. It simply shines all night. The waves still roll. The wind still blows. The stars still wander through. And if a thing is really true, It'll still be true tomorrow too. Outro The keeper pointed eastward. "Kingdom Ron's that way." I thanked him for the guidance And prepared to leave that day. Then halfway down the pathway I heard somebody shout: "Oi mate! We've found another relic!" I said, "Have ya?" "What's this one?" "A bit of Noah's kettle." I sighed. "Go on then." And off we went again.
