Proud Wolf Joins the Fight
Chapter 5 – Proud Wolf Joins the Fight They followed the Wise Owl’s directions to a narrow ravine where the pines grew thick. The air was sharp with stone and pine sap, and heavy pawprints pressed deep into the soil before vanishing into shadow. A low growl rolled through the trees. From the dark stepped Proud Wolf—broad-shouldered, silver-gray fur, eyes glowing like embers. He circled once, soundless on the forest floor, measuring the three small figures who did not run. “Why are you here?” he said at last. “And why should I spare you?” Excalibur lifted the feather with both paws. “Wise Owl sent us,” he said. “I’m Excalibur. The king’s men stole my boy, Arthur. I mean to bring him home.” Sly Fox stood taller beside him. “The king hunts us too. He burns and takes. He destroys and calls it order.” Clever Hare nodded. “He did not stop at the forest’s edge. If we do nothing, there will be nothing left.” Proud Wolf lowered his head, his nose brushing close to the silver feather. “Many speak of courage,” he rumbled. “Few hold it when the shadow looms.” The wolf’s ears flicked. He paced once more, heavy paws soft against the needles, then stopped before them. “Your words are honest. Your courage true. And the owl’s word carries weight. But hear me well—one wolf is not enough. If you wish for strength, you must seek it not from me alone, but from the pack.” He lifted his muzzle toward the moon, voice rising in a long, low howl that shivered through the forest. From far and near, other voices answered. “The Council of the Fang will gather,” he said. “Convince them, and the strength you seek will be yours.”
