before the first star was lit and before the mountains were sculpted from the void, you were. the eternal son, the uncreated word, dwelling in perfect light and perfect love with the father and the spirit. you spoke and galaxies bloomed. you breathed and life began. and in that perfect counsel, before the fall, before the dust of eden was even formed, the lamb was slain. your plan was not a reaction, but a decree. a covenant promise whispered into the fabric of creation itself. we were a people in shadow, a world groaning under the weight of its own rebellion, chasing echoes and building kingdoms on the sand. we were deaf to the promise, blind to the prophecies that pointed to you like a thousand steady stars all fixed on a single point in the night sky. we could not climb to you, so in the scandal of the word becoming flesh, you came down to us. and so, in the fullness of time you had ordained, you came. not in a legion of fire or with a crown that burned the eyes, but you, the infinite, folded yourself into the finite. you, the uncontainable, were contained in a womb. you, the author of life, took on breath and blood and bone, becoming what you were not, without ever ceasing to be what you are. the hands that held the cosmos were now held by a young mother, hands that would one day be pierced for our transgression. the wood of the manger was a promise of the wood of the cross, and the swaddling clothes a shadow of the grave clothes, for you were born to die so that we might be born again. so tonight we don’t just sing of a baby, we worship the covenant-keeping king. we don’t just admire a humble birth, we fall on our faces before the sovereign lord of history who stepped into it to save us from it. this is not just a story of peace on earth, but the story of God at war with sin for the sake of his people. you are emmanuel, god with us, not just to comfort us in our darkness, but to shatter it. you are jesus, for you will save your people from their sins. all glory to the father who planned, all glory to the son who came, and all glory to the spirit who reveals. amen.
